Art college is one of the instances where it makes sense. It works as intended, is powerful enough for a bunch of different applications needed for music or graphic design, and requires very little thought to use beyond those programs.
Except that the new one didn't come bundled with any kind of image editing software. I thought 'Oh, I'll just buy photoshop, time I bought a new version', so I looked at prices, seemed pretty reasonable then I noticed the word '/month' and I thought 'Look, I don't mind paying for your software but I am FIDDLESTICKED if I'm going to rent it...

That's the new model major softwares heading to. They discovered that if they don't force people to rent, business slows down once most of their clientele has the product. This was if a business needs something for a long time, even if the buy cost would've been 10 times the rent cost, they're making more by the end of the first year.

Also, same as with music, subscriptions are a good way to curb piracy.
