Poor Steve, three weeks of Jury Duty. Tough being a peer for three weeks.

One time on Jury duty, the selection process, sat there with all the other potential jurors in a room...for 3 hours...just waiting.

Then the judge comes in and says.... "The defendant didn't show up, but he will next time.... never had a defendant not show up from the county lockup.... you are all free to go...now I have to go fill out a warrant for his arrest"

I later found out why the defendant did not show up, he was in a municipal lockup, he got arrested....again... the night before

I'm down with performing my civic duty. Hope I don't give the impression otherwise.

No, not at all. I know you appreciate civic duty and I'm glad you do. I just hate jury duty. With a passion, actually. I immediately feel badly for anyone I like when they get jury duty.

Just threw out my last mouthpiece, first time since 1970 that I don't have at least one. Don't want to hit anyone any more, don't want to get hit no more, either.

back from dinner the boss paid for.

Had gotten a bonus for March, but in a gift card form that was a beast to redeem it seemed. Non of the places were on my list of going anytime soon.
Last night I got a call from my father-in-law, the restaurant we were supposed to go for a birthday party had a fire and was closed, instead the lunch would be at Olive Garden.

Oh my :) I finally had a good use for that bonus!
But their chicken parm was not so gut.....

Jury duty...

In Virginia, I'm exempt. Even if I didn't claim the exemption when they send out the card informing you that your time is near... I'd be dismissed pretty much right off the bat anyway.

I'm exempt as well.
I would do it though....buuuut.....they want you to be a citizen....

I'm not officially exempt, but in my experience, having an education makes you pretty much exempt. Been called in several times over the years, and dismissed every single time.

we didn't have any cops in the jury pool, but a few who were in related fields. One is a corrections officer.

DD, I will try not to take that personally. Lol.

No reason why you should. It's just been my personal experience that lawyers don't want educated jurors. They want people who will believe what they're told. I'm sure there are exceptions, I've just never personally encountered one.

Besides, maybe you come across as really gullible in person...

Jesus, DD, I thought it was unintentional at first, but seriously. Are you aware of how dickish you're coming across? You really can't think of a reason I might take either of your posts as an insult? I honestly can't see how one would take them otherwise.

It was intended to be tongue in cheek, Steve. Sorry you didn't get that.

[Edit] To further clarify. The comment about you coming across as gullible was intended to be tongue in cheek.
As for what lawyers want, I stand by that. I've been called in and had the lawyer say "If you have a graduate degree, raise your hand." and dismiss every single person with an advanced degree.

If any of that is upsetting to you, then I'm sorry.

please apologize for your own actions, not for mine, DD. If you apologize for being an *******, I will gladly accept your apology. Otherwise, you can stuff it.

To further clarify, when you apologize for something I do or how I react, it's not actually an apology. for example were I to say, "I'm sorry you're an *******." Not a real apology. Just another insult thinly disguised as an apology.

Man from UNCLE. I like it better each time I watch it. Need to pick up the soundtrack.

In MA nobody is exempt any more. Especially not cops. A cop will never get picked for a jury but you have to sit there for eight hours anyway.

Jury selection is actually kind of interesting. Who the attorneys want on a case is heavily influenced by the nature of the evidence they intend to present, by the client they're representing... even by the judge hearing the case! Whether or not the jurors have advanced degrees is certainly something they'll weigh; if the evidence is complex, the attorneys may want jurors who can follow along easily -- or those who'll be easily snowed... There's just way too much to go into and there's a reason that there are actually experts in jury selection.

One of my favorite jury selection stories was the time I got stuck watching them do the voir dire while I was waiting for my case to be called for a plea. They brought the first pool of potential jurors in, and about the 2nd or 3rd was a young Asian woman who clearly and obviously didn't speak English. Took the judge about 3 questions to dismiss her as unable to serve (can't decide on the evidence if you can't understand the language it's presented in!). They ended up with about 3/4 of that pool struck for "language" as just about any of them that could fake it (I say cynically) did... and had to call up a 2nd pool.

I have jury duty coming up. Should be interesting. Having a background in law enforcement and also having worked for a corporation as their person working to limit their liability lawyers generally hate me. Should be interesting this time when I sit and they realize I am related indirectly to several prosecutors in Las Vegas. Which will not matter if it is civil but certainly will if it is a criminal case.
