Tell me something good...

So many broken throttle cables, I loved my bug, but…
Throttle cables, yes. I had several air cooled VWs. In high school, I had one with a broken passenger seat. The back was always fully reclined, so if you rode with me you had to keep yourself upright by holding onto the handle in the dash.

Another one had a broken speedometer. The cable actually routed to the front left tire, and I never could get it right. Best I could do was secure it well enough that the needle would bounce. I basically just estimated my speed based on other cars and which gear I was in.

My favorite was a ‘74 Karmann Ghia. Loved that car. Stock engine so going up a steep hill, I could only maintain about 25 mph in second gear. But it was cool, nonetheless.

I still love the sound of fweem.

I have a steroid shot today (for poison oak issue on my skin). I feel I have a lot of extra energy (feel like 20 years old again). Does anybody have experience in this?

Do you feel

- you have a lot of extra energy?
- your immunity system is weaker?

Some cool news. My kid is a grad student at the University of Washington and one of the professors/researchers there was awarded a Nobel prize this year in chemistry. While they are obviously at very different points, she did coauthor a paper with him. I think it’s pretty neat to see her name next to a Nobel laureate’s. Perhaps she’ll be a Nobel winner in 15 or so years. :)

Congratulations! That’s real big and real good.

ha ha ha.. don't forget that the shot will wear off and your body will remind you of your true age lol.

Since the steroid, I have doubled my training. I may have to go back to my regular routine next month. It's good feeling that to be able to do 20 kicks and 60 punches non-stop and still not feel tired (repeat 3 punches and 1 kick combo drill 20 times).

My best friend had a VW when we were young. Had to have an ice scrapper in the car
as ice would form on the inside of the windshield all through the winter - even though the heat worked.

It was awesome.

The defroster ducting was easy to remove and a real ***** to replace. So most times when it failed it was gone forever. The standard beetles had terrible defrosters, even when it was functional. Super beetles were a little better.

I hit a large puddle in the rain one time. Water got into the heat exchangers and the inside of my windshield was instantly covered in steam. Couldn’t see a thing. Fortunately I was able to get pulled over, but won’t forget that.

VWs were pretty dangerous. But maybe that was part of the fun.

Dangerous? In L.A. traffic? Nah, it was beyond dangerous. Driving with your throttle cable in your left hand and shifting with your right. Did it bunches of times as an immortal teenager, with a spliff on my lip, while trying to rewind the tape deck. Anybody who ever rode a VW bus knows the sheet metal nose was the only thing between you and another car, even teenage morons like me 😁

I spent far too much time in L.A, don’t want to ever be there again.

But I’ll tell you what, the folks out there know how to drive. Maybe a little crazy, maybe a little too fast, but they can flat out drive.

I was driving there one time pulling a camper, my wife and two dogs with me. An eighteen wheeler had broken open, it was carrying spikes. Spikes for cryin out loud.

There were a fleet of street sweepers, those big suckers, in an arrowhead formation pushing the spikes out of the way. The concrete barriers were two feet deep in spikes, sparkling in the L.A sun. I’m chewing my lip, scared to get a flat tire. L.A cars were whizzing by me, yelling, “Ain’t you ever seen nails before, you freaking idiot, get out of the way!”

And they were right.

I took pictures of the comet last night. Photos done with iPhone 12, with ten second exposure. First photo was done with iPhone only, second with binoculars at 12x. I am debating whether or not to move the telescope somewhere where I can view the comet as it requires disassembly to transport and is a bit of a chore. Too many trees and houses around, I cannot view it from my yard or front sidewalk.
