There were, at one point, 15 men in my gym this AM. 12 had full beards including those big bushy, often ginger types. So uncouth šŸ˜‘

Oh... ! Can't believe I didn't let you all know! I know you would have all been wondering.

"The update you've all been waiting for...

Still have maintained my brushing-teeth-and-not-rinsing habit! Almost two years strong! There is hope for us all!"

My quote from 2.5 years ago.... but a few months ago I decided... to rinse again!!!

Why you ask... WHY?!?!? All this work and habit change.... why??

Well when my reflux stuff started playing up, I did a bunch of research, allegedly leaving toothpaste in your mouth could potentially be a trigger for those with reflux.

So out of an abundance of caution I just decided to rinse again. I actually feel it has helped but who knows.

Kept it going for 4 years though!

What a journey you've all followed me on.

Most people have no need to attend a dedicated training facility purely for health and fitness. Mess about with some dumbbells, do some pushups and go for a run a few times and you've basically covered all your bases and you can spend money on things you actually want, like martial arts lessons and cake
You can certainly get an excellent workout without any special equipment or going to a gym. You don't even need dumbbells... You can do a lot with nothing at all, and a piece of rope and/or a stick or two can add even more options.

But... Some of us need the extra motivation of going somewhere. Some of us like the atmosphere. Or the range of equipment and options. Or don't have a practical and safe space for doing much or storing much gear.

This idea is based upon, I think, the idea of the cephalic phase of digestion where presence of food (detected by taste) in the mouth initiates gastric juice secretion and insulin release (the cephalic phase is a nervous reflex rather than hormonal so very quick) So the assumption is that the taste of toothpaste initiates gastric juice secretion. It would apply to any lingering taste in your mouth. Iā€™ve just read a few articles saying that high fluoride reduces acid reflux šŸ¤·šŸ¾ If it works for you, though, go keep spitting. I think you can buy flavourless toothpasteā€¦or is that for dogs? šŸ¤”

Interesting!!! I thought it was the residue toothpaste being swallowed eventually and it causing it, but you may be right too, and that makes sense

Then it becomes the ā€˜gastric phaseā€™ where the presence of food/chemicals is detected in the stomach and initiates gastric acid secretion. Many years ago the suspected culprit for reflux/gastric ulcers was washing up liquid (ā€˜dish soapā€™) residue on crockery; people never used to rinse their tableware after washing and they thought the detergent was disrupting the protective mucus layer in the stomach. But this was proved inconclusiveā€¦but you probably shouldnā€™t ingest detergents so keep rinsing!

I think Iā€™ve asked you before if youā€™ve been checked for helicobacter pylori?

I couldnā€™t find a primary source on Pubmed without wading through lots of pages! But these are reasonably credible. I thought this was ā€˜common knowledgeā€™.

Thanks for the links, did a rough skim through them for now. It actually makes a fairly good amount of sense. I'd wager though, that taking someone who does not exercise at all, and have them start exercising, they will be burning more calories at least until their body adapts to the change in lifestyle.

Perhaps but it sounds like itā€™s a minimal increase in expenditure. Evolution seems to have favoured those who can conserve the most calories and those that didnā€™t, died and didnā€™t carry their genes into the next generation.

Well finally got all my stuff moved into My new bedroom. Been practicing My forms everyday. Have class tonight, hopefully sifu will like my progress. Other than that not a whole lot going on.
