I'm aware of who it will negatively impact. I just don't understand what the logic is behind it - why the gov't is closing them and why people are supporting it. Is it really just to save .1% of the budget, or is there some benefit to not having them that I'm missing? And what alternatives are they offering for people having issues with their social security, to speak with someone?

This feels like another instance that's happened at least 3 times in the last 2 months, where they shut down offices, reopened them when they realized they were needed and begged workers to come back.
The goal is to break it, then privatize it. That's the end game across government. Lose your home in a hurricane? Well, FEMA has been gutted, but guess what? A private company is selling emergency services now. That's the vision for government. We'll see if congress and the American public let them do it.

A typical day in an SSA field office now involves lines about 50 people deep trying to help angry people who may be violent all day long. And the person in charge is completely incompetent.

Buka, I kind of feel the same way my friend. I have dedicated the past 20 years to serve and protect. Serving both my country and community. The level of disrespect I have seen from both the general public and the upper government towards federal workers and veterans is appalling. It makes me wonder why I bothered to put myself in such dangerous situations. I am proud of what I have done but I am quite ashamed and sad for the country. The division and hate, the political madness. That isn't why we served. Now I see thousands of veterans being fired from federal employment and workers unions being abolished. It's all very disheartening and makes me think of all the guys who gave so much for a country that doesn't care and forgets so quickly.
Fun fact, about 30% of the federal workforce are veterans.

Working for a state is not a whole lot different...

I lost faith in the federal government and its care for veterans in 2011 when my father's Parkinsons got to the point he needed to go to a nursing home. He spent 22 years in teh navy, been in 2 wars, used as an experiment during nuke testing. and when it came tine for him to go into a nursing home they VA and the federal goivernment did nothing, offered nothing and gave no support.

Similar thing this past year with my mother who is now in a nursing home, she was Navy for 6 years during the Korean war, and she is also getting nothing. Heck we are even having trouble with medicaid who wants proof of when a bank account, that she never had, was closed.
Yeah, it really sucks. I'm sorry to hear that. :(

I thank them for their service. It is a damn shame that the government all too often turns it back on the veterans who gave so much. Not only the government but many people do as well. No veteran should return from war and be neglected. Thank you for sharing that. I'm terribly sorry that your parents were treated that way.

Thank you for your service Sir. Sincerely.

Why is eliminating unnecessary jobs, whether they are in the federal or private sector a bad thing? We are experiencing some of the same things that occurred during the previous person term of leadership (trying hard not to make this a political comment). Running the government like a business. Being a business owner, maybe I understand this more than some, but when you look at Our countries deficit, it is no wonder there will be some measures viewed painful by some. It has some 24 years since we had a balanced budget so, trying to right the ship in four years is a Tall order.

As for the union comment, can you expand on this? I am not aware of any unions being abolished.

I am old enough to understand your viewpoint about caring.
Thank you for your kind words

Without getting too political, the president created an executive order to strip hundreds of thousands of federal workers of their unions. These unions provide rights and protections for America's workforce. It is especially important for law enforcement and correctional officers. We have few protections as it is and work in extremely dangerous environments. We need all the protection we can get it!

You nailed it. This is without a doubt the agenda. I don't think they can privatize every agency, but they can sure slim it down.

I feel that is a Very Extreme viewpoint on what the current administration is trying to do. Reel it back in to some manageable? Yes. Abolish it all together? No.
Yes, it will be ugly for a while. But it will get better.

Decided today, since the non-state side of the IT house does not want to listen to me about things I know about, does not take my suggestions, and makes users wait inordinate amounts of time while they try and do things that absolutely will not work, sometimes the same exact thing that failed the first time, many more times, just to have it fail again.... I will just sit quietly and watch the circus.... You would think a new person coming into a system, that I have been dealing with for 20 years, might ask questions....but they don't...they just fail repeatedly.....and the users suffer
