It's just a personal and professional bugbear of mine that something that was actually a victory for planning and forethought gets used as an example of needless hysteria all too often because people didn't see with their own eyes the effort that went into making 'bad things' not happen.

I don't think Mauna was having a dig you, by the way. I reckon the points you made are pretty similar and show you both have a grasp on the basic problem - which is that the wonderful reasoning machine in everyones skull somehow gets screwed up on a grand scale in certain circumstances when we, as Exile decried earlier, start behaving like communal insects responding to threat pheromones rather than thinking beings.
