Different brand of belt at school.

Black Belt
Awhile back I was reading a lot of posts involving the brands of Karate belts. I read a post someplace that said the poster believed it was inappropriate to show up for class with a different brand of belt (I believe the discussion involved color belts) than the brand given by the school. I seem to recall the post was mentioned in a thread about students having for a particular brand of equipment, At the school I attend I noticed the the majority of black belts have Shureido brand Gi's, but there are other brands worn.

I tried to find the post but was unsuccessful.

Has anyone heard of this before?

I don’t think I’d care, but can’t say for sure, having never experienced it. I can’t imagine a student going out and getting a belt on his own. Whatever for?

Some belts are nicer.

I got an Adidas belt for a while because I thought having a branded belt was funny.

I've done this with white belts and yellow/orange belts before. Simply because I already have some available that fit me well, and the new ones aren't always the right size. I don't think anyone's ever noticed.

I couldn't see myself going out and buying a different brand for a colored belt though; you're only wearing it for a couple months (normally) anyway so that just seems like a waste of money. And if someone was a black belt, I'd think the school knows them well enough at that point to know it's not some sort of disrespect thing, and/or they can have a mature discussion with the owner if they've got an issue.

The only time I see it being an issue is if A) you're wearing a belt color you haven't earned yet (duh), or B) you got a belt embroidered and they don't do that at your school.

I think the use of white and black belts began at the same time, negating the story that black belt began as a dirty white belt.

My first few belts were all white, before I soaked them in a pail of dye. I think green (before brown) was the first colored belt I bought.

the thing about not washing your belt and it turning different colours as you acquire repeated injuries is hyperbole. Just think about it a little. What activities in karate cause you to bleed from the midsection? What's more it's gross.

I never washed my belts and they never got smelly or anything else unpleasant.

Washing ones blackbelt over and over I can imagine it quickly get that cool worn look like a “grandmasters” belt.

This one, what an idea to come up with, also unimaginable during the “Golden Age”
