I wish I knew more about my tkd history relating to the Kwan's. Will watch this thread with great interest.

As happy as I am that we always look to the future I'd like for our history to be common knowledge among our schools here.

I forgot this very important one from Taekwondo Jidokwan. We have some much, it's easy to over look some of it.

PLEDGE OF THE MEMBER

1. I will observe the rule and absolutely obey the order of Jidokwan
2. I will attain Physical and Mental Discipline in the spirit of Jidokwan.
3. I will devote myself to the creation of new tradition and achievement of Jidokwan

Chung Do Kwan Membership Oath

We, as members, train our spirits and bodies according to the strict code.
We, as members, are united in mutual friendship.
We, as members, will comply with regulations and obey instructors.

The Chung Do Kwan has a poster with the oath in hangul and english. I don't know if they still pass that out to instructors.

Do you know which kwan many of the early guys to come to australia were from, or was it varied?

Jundokan Dojo Kun

Be mindful of your courtesy with humbleness.
Train yourself considering physical strength.
Study and contrive seriously.
Be calm in mind and swift in action.
Take care of yourself.
Live a plain and simple life.
Do not be too proud of yourself.
Continue training with patience and humbleness.

This one is perhaps more relevant to taekwondoin, as it is the Shotokan Dojo Kun, I believe some of the kwans used a variation of it at some point, Certainly the Chayon-ryu people (the founder GM Kim, Pyung Soo has connections to the Chang Moo Kwan and the Kang Duk Kwan ) still do.

First. Seek perfection of character
First. Protect the way of the truth
First. Foster the spirit of effort
First. Respect the principles of etiquette and respect others
First. Guard against impetuous courage and refrain from violent behavior.

I'm of Jidokwan lineage, too. The more I practice Taekwondo, the more I value developing an understanding of its underlying philosophy, including that of the Kwan to which I can trace my heritage. Information about Jidokwan history and philosophy can be found on the website of the Taekwondo Jidokwan Historical Society: http://www.taekwondojidokwan.com/

Im not aware of my GM's kwan. He is pretty much retired these days and is rarely seen (I thought he was about 75 years old but my instructor told me recently he is nearly 80). I am 99% sure my chief instructor would not know what a kwan is, so I really have no idea about the actual 'roots' of the club. To be honest, its not something I am overly curious about, but on the same token it may be handy to know I suppose, thats why I asked if it was a certain kwan that sent early pioneers to australia.

What is your Kwan philosophy?

I have teachers from the Kang Duk Won, Oh Do Kwan, Moo Do Kwan and the most senior of them from the Chang Moo Kwan lineage, so the Chang Moo Kwan kwan philosophy is the one I like the to most.

Eight Elements of Perfection
Eight Elements of Courtesy

1. Gaze 1. Loyalty To Our Nation
2. Ki Hap 2. Respect For Our Parents
3. Shifting of Weight and Balance 3. Respect Between Teacher and Student
4. Accuracy in Attack and Defense 4. Trust and Loyalty Between Friends
5. Distance Control 5. Discretion in Using Force
6. Coordination of Timing and Power 6. Live What You Teach
7. Breathing Control 7. Courtesy At All Times
8. Flexibility in Mind and Body 8. Cultivation of Capability
