It is. Is there a second part to this question?

It seems the patriarchal society is still alive and kicking, so to speak, in Japan. Her mother informed me that judo is a middle-school sport that all *male* students learn in P.E. class. Girls not allowed. I was surprised at this given a few high-ranking females in the Kodokan.

Apparently it's still rare (?) for females to learn martial arts in Japan. I can't anticipate her happiness.

A friend of mine's wife is from Japan, went to school in Japan and got her Black Belt in Kendo in school in Japan and she did not seem to think that was all that uncommon. One of the oldest Aikido people in Japan is a woman and there are a lot of woman in Aikido in Japan. Sensei Keiko Fukuda is a woman and was the olderst living student of Kano Jigoro, however I am not sure if she is still living
