I am wondering what is required for a Black Belt where you study.
If you dont mind please include your style and where you study.

Black belts are tested on:

basics - stances, hand weapons, foot weapons, elbows and knees
12 forms
168 self defense techniques
reactions - random and unrehearsed attacks from unarmed, armed, and single or multiple opponents
teaching ability
other - history of the art, etc
and as much hard contact sparring against the instructors as you can handle, or can't as the case may be.

:D

Lamont

Basics - blocks,strikes, kicks

Excercises - Oh yes 100's of them each

Forms - from 12-20 depending on what the testers want to see. (done as many times as they want over hours )

Sparring - Hard contact against 0ne, two three, more (up to the whol class) with and with out weapons

Sanchin _ ( I know this is a form) done many time while being struck with hands feet sticks bokens etc

Knowledge of varrious nerve centers and the ability to hit them while sparring

Some other thing also
This over a 12 hour day or a two day gathering to test the Black Belt

Our school starts off with a 2 mile timed run followed by jumping jacks, push-ups and sit ups. All the forms. Basics with calisthenics in between techniques. All self-defense material armed and unarmed. Sparring and sparring versus multiple opponents. Complete various breaks. My test started at 1030 and ended sometime after 6. By far the hardest thing I ever did. Hope that helps!

Our black belt tests:

1st Dan Test:
1. Execution of Palgue Chil and Pal
2. Free fight three times: against a fellow red belt and then two consecutive black belts. You must be able to contact cleanly at least once each partner.
3. Breaking-your choice. 1st Dan breaking should showcase your mastery of at least one basic technique. Your Instructor should work with you on this, but it is ultimately your decision.
4. Write a three page report on your thoughts about Tae Kwon Do

2nd Dan test:
1. Koryo and Kumgang
2. Free fight: same as above, except all black belts. Sometimes, depending on skill level, 2nd and 3rd Dan testers will do 2-3 on one free fighting
3. Breaking-showcase your skill in a particular area (jumping, spinning, power etc.). Obviously, 2nd Dan and 3rd Dan breaking should be more advanced than 1st Dan.

3rd Dan test:
Same as above, except Keumgang and Taebaek

Have top meet the age requirement, under 14.

Have to have been training at least 3 years.

At least 8 months since last belt.

And a rather large checklist of things to meet.

Sweeps, Passes, Escapes, takedowns, striking, submissions, etc.

And the biggest part - Sparring.
