I asked the MMA guy a the gym if he would like to spar. He's all for it. He offered me shin pads but I told him I won't need those as I'm coming off multiple injuries.

He's much stronger than me. I'll get to see how rusty I am after more than 6 years of no sparring. Maybe we'll sparring Friday or Saturday. I'm already making battle plans.

Now all we need is the boxer to join and we'll be able to get a good sparring workout and some good video. I spar to learn so I'll be keeping track of what I'm working on and how well or bad it went.

Good luck, and have fun! Sparring to learn is definitely the right attitude to have :)
That and I told him I will tap out quickly when the time comes. I'll be teaching myself Chinese wrestling , so I expect nothing but a train wreck lol. But a fun one.

If you are going to learn something new, why not learn BJJ instead of Chinese wrestling? BJJ is well proven and well respected. You should be able to find Gracie JJ close by.

Make sure you make video, I am interested to see CMA vs MMA.

Oh brilliant, have a blast man :). Sparring is just plain ol fun!

What ruleset are you going to use ? Striking only or striking with grappling ? Throws legal ? Good luck and have fun.

I think you should use the shin pads. If you do any round kicks, it's better to have that. Even if you don't, he might do low round kicks to your legs, you can use the shin to block.

That's the reason I practice kicking pole with shin to toughen them up. I still would wear the shin guard if I spar just in case.

Chinese wrestling is more along the lines of my fighting philosophy and fighting style, where the goal is to put my opponent on the ground, not to go to the ground with my opponent. The other thing is that I want to show that that kung fu is effective. Specifically Jow Ga. My Theory is that Shuai Jiao is the grappling component of Kung Fu. In order to add validity to this theory I will need to be able to use it with Jow Ga even if it means teaching myself which is going to really interesting in itself, but I think it's doable.

My personal challenge is to show that one can overcome BJJ without learning BJJ. To beat BJJ without taking BJJ would be a great journey, probably full of me typing out, but everything has it's weakness, which I already have a theory about. I'm excited about all the things I can learn since this guy knows TKD, BJJ, and Muay Thai. Lots of good stuff for me to get hit with and to work out a Jow Ga solution for. For me personally I already know I can fight. Been there done it. The question for me in terms of martial arts is Can I fight using Jow Ga Kung Fu?

I never really thought of my Kung Fu through that perspective until you asked me your question. I train Kung Fu to learn how to fight with it vs learning it for self-defense. I can use it for self-defense if I need to but self-defense isn't my main focus when it comes to Kung Fu.

Definitely. I wouldn't miss out on that opportunity. If I pull something off then I may not get an opportunity to pull it off again. When I mess up, then I want a video of it so I can study where I went wrong and how to improve so I don't make the same mistake twice. There was another Muay Thai guy training yesterday. He had some good kicks for an old guy. Some of the kicks gave me some concern. I was more concern about the speed than the power. The power wasn't intimidating probably because I know how to neutralize the power. Speed on the other hand, isn't as easy.

But yes I will record and I will do my best to represent Jow Ga Kung Fu.

Striking, grappling, throwing, Anything that isn't going to cause permanent damage. I don't plan on fighting out of too many holds that he gets me in. I mean I'll fight it up to the point where he can lock it, and at that point I'll tap out. I want him to have the opportunity to at least get to point where he can lock it. That way he can work on his techniques as well.. Every once in a while we'll throw some tips and pointers to the boxing guy who sometimes experiments with kicks. I taught the boxer guy some footwork and how to make the punch land at the same time as the foot lands. The MMA guy taught the boxer guy how to maximize the kicking power.

It will be fun. I think I'll end up surprising the MMA guy. One day the MMA guy said. "You (general) have to pressure test the technique." I got irritated and wanted to say "You pressure test yourself not the technique." The techniques are there because at one time someone was able to use it lol. But I kept all of that to myself. The MMA guy was also experimenting with Shuai Jiao, he wanted to see if it really works. So I'm hoping to make that a reality lol.

The MMA has added a lot of muscle since I first saw him so I'm hoping it will be the same as carrying fat. meaning that it's going to take more energy to carry the mass and as a result he'll gas out before me as long as I can keep him active.

It’s going to be interesting for sure. You’re not a small guy and if you say he is bigger than gas and fitness will definitely come into play on both sides. Just beginning to spar again will also be a huge factor. Squaring off against an opponent can easily cause people to forget how to breath and relax.

One suggestion I would make is to set a timer for a minute to see how you both are doing. The timer is a safety valve that will remind everyone that the match is for fun as well as educational. Takes the pressure off of “winning” or submitting your opponent which usually results in ramping up the intensity. When you guys know each other a little better you can extend the time but other all about keeping injuries down and egos out of the question.

Looking forward to seeing the footage.

I think you should use the shin pads. If you do any round kicks, it's better to have that.
If I do round house kicks or kicks to the leg then I better make sure my timing and accuracy is on. This means that I will need to lead my opponent into a position where he won't be able to check my kicks.. Similar to what I did to this guy. Move him into a position that makes it difficult or impossible to respond with a leg check.. For kicks that are thrown at me, I'll need to use my footwork to get me in side of the kicks and my then use my arms and legs to manipulate the kicks. There are certain places where i can stand where his kicks won't reach me. I just have to get there at the right time. I will only put the shin pads on if I fail miserably at accomplishing these goals.

I already know he will use low leg kicks, because my stance will encourage that. He likes to kick to the inside of the thigh to. I had him kick me as part of conditioning and he attacked a variety of areas. My foot work is going to be critical with dealing with his kicks. I have a lot of prep work just to get back to where I was with being able to see punches and kicks and body movement.

Is it Friday/Saturday yet? I want to hear what happened already! :p

Are you going to film it? Always a good way to spot things to improve.
It's a maybe in about an hour from this post. Nothing set in stone except me bringing my gear tonight. I won't film the first couple of sparring sessions as those will be just for me to get back into things. Once we know the limits of power then I'll start filming provided he's OK with the idea of that. I will remind him tonight to work his techniques. It will be his best opportunity as I plan on fighting high in my stance for the first month. My Shuai Jiao training starts tonight.

Good luck, I envy you, my biggest challenge is to find a doctor at this point!!! You won't believe how much run around I am going through. I can't make an appointment with the specialist until I have an MRI. I need to have my primary care doctor to prescribe me that. It used to be you go directly the the specialist and they do everything for you. I just managed to get the prescription and email to me.

Soooooooooo

I showed up but the MMA guy didn't Maybe I'll see him this Saturday or Sunday.

So I started my Shuai Jiao Training with 3 exercises. I'm all about the footwork. But mostly about not getting injured again lol. The 3 exercises were new to me and I looked it, but I started to get a better understanding of it towards the end of training. I've added these exercises to the ones I already do. I'm not sure how my back will feel tomorrow. I didn't over do it, but those exercises really worked my core. They weren't difficult but they weren't easy either. The footwork!? yeah that was crazy too. For the time being I'm just taking it easy and building my strength and working on trying to have good form.

Over all I like the little bit that I've done so far.

My guess is that your biggest challenge is resisting the temptation to train. But I'm glad you are going to see the doctor though. It'll be a good vacation for your body to repair some of the other less serious stuff.

Ha ha, he might be afraid of you.

What 3 exercises? Curious to see.

It just means more practice time for me.
I'm doing the first part (the footwork) of this exercise.
Thee application of this reminds me of how I used the Cat Stance to escape an attempted trip. My opponent steps behind my leg in #1. I quickly move into cat stance and allow my relax leg flow over his legs. By keeping my leg relaxed, I'm able prevent my leg from being used a point that can be hooked. It's like trying to heal hook a sheet of paper. Your foot will always flow under that paper and the paper will always escape. In #3 I'm rooting my one leg stance through his arms, as he pushes my head in order to control my balance.

This exercise

The third exercise is one I do in Jow Ga because it's similar to how the legs raises in the first video. The motion is similar to the picture below. In the picture it looks like I'm swinging my leg through but I'm actually lift it upwards as well which causes bag to flip. In application, I would lift my opponent's leg up as he tries to escape. He lifts his leg up so that he can move his leg over the top of mine and escape like what is shown in the video. But when I lift my leg it means that he has to lift higher than he originally planned and as a result. I'm able to use my leg to pull his leg towards my hands
