Last Poster #8

My landlord went fishing this morning. Just came back and gave us a cleaned mahi-mahi fillet. It weighs 4.2 pounds. WOW.

Or at home?
Parents absolved themselves of the responsibility to socialise their progeny into normal members of society, some decades ago. They’re too busy trying to be their children’s friend/drinking buddies etc. In the U.K., we’ve had issues with young children being sent to nursery school who are not potty trained and/or unable to use flatware in the correct, British fashion (😉).

Nominative determination sort of, in action. A news report about the snow storms sweeping across the USA.

I'm collecting all the degrees my society doesn't value. I have a BA in sculpture and an MA in art history. Next I'm gonna get a B.Th if all goes well and when I'm working as a priest I plan to do a BA in some sort of science with the open university. But it would have to be some despised branch of science that rightwingers hate, like pure mathematics or conservation
Just curious how you pay for all this schooling?

A variety of methods. The BA in sculpture I got a student loan, as I studied in Wales the government paid my tuition fees. For the MA, I managed to save a few thousand and then it turned out I could get another loan to study a second degree part time. The B.Th would be funded to a certain extent by the church, if I pass the discernment process. The BsC that I plan to get would be after some time working actively as a priest, so I'd be able to put money aside from my stipend. Open university, part time.

Before 1998, all U.K. degree courses were free to the student; in fact one’s local government paid you a living stipend to the student as well! I bought a Marshall guitar amp with mine 😐

I made a rare visit to the cinema today (Nosferatu) and I went in November too (The Heretic). On both occasions I’ve had to ask people to stop talking during the film. They chatted all the way through the adverts and trailers, which is fine, but it’s clearly a warning sign that they will continue during the film. Be warned…

Out of curiosity, how much do you owe in loans? Since I know where I am that'd be probably around 60k in loans.

You only begin pay off this student loan when you start earning more than £24,000. If you never reach that threshold, you never have to pay. The median U.K. salary is £37,430.

Hey so. I’m super curious myself. Did you go to a private university? Out of state resident? Did you work at all while in school? Apply for scholarships or grants? That seems like a lot of debt to carry even before you have a good job!

60k was around what I had in loans from just my masters degree, if I remember correctly (I was lucky enough to live with my parents afterwards and put close to 100% of my income to paying it for a few years). It was an in-state private university, and I worked during summers in undergrad. While in graduate school, to help afford it, I had two part time jobs, and an unpaid internship that was required for the program.

That sounds miserable.
Yup, yesterday’s snowstorm made our flight leave late, and we landed at the same time the connecting flight was taxiing to take off. Airline rescheduled us and we had a choice between 31 hours or 9… opted for 9

Irony is, we had no snow, but wherever flight 1 came from did and it was late

If i wasn’t so tired from getting up at 3:00am to catch flight one, which was 2.5 hours late, i could have driven 21 minutes longer than the wait and gotten to our destination
