how long to first dan in your club?

In our system we have 10 color belts:
White
High-White
Yellow
High-yellow
Green
High-Green
Blue
High-Blue
Red
High-Red

Shodan (solid black no markings)

1st Dan

Testing is every other month (6 times a year).

Starting at white belt, you could test from white to blue in 1 year. Then get to High-Red in the next 6 months. We have a requirement for a 6 month "trial period" to test from High-Red to Shodan. Then another 6 month wait from Sho Dan to 1st.

Our absolute minimum from white to 1st dan is 2.5 years.

We essentially have 8 ranks prior to black belt, and bare minimum of 3 years required to be asked to prepare for 1st dan test.

  • you get the idea.. .
Personally, it took me nearly 7 years to earn my 1st dan, but I was young and didn't pay attention like I should have.. . I was known as the push-up king of my little dojang when I was a child.

At my dojang it's approx. 3 to 4 years training on a regular basis several times a week and knowing and absorbing all of what you're doing, and performing competently what you've been taught...:asian:
