This happened about 6 or 7 times within the same sparring session. It's one of the things that I wished I had recorded because it was crazy. We weren't trying to punch each other's fist, We were just punching through the same path at the same time. By far that's the craziest thing I've experienced in sparring.Have this ever happened to you? Your opponent throws a punch. You also throw a punch. Your fist and your opponent's fist meet face to face.
This has happened to me once.

These two elements (kata and makiwara) were certainly present in the 1800's (earlier for kata, don't know about makiwara). But I think the main component of early karate was partner drills of grab releases, grappling, defend and counter scenarios, and all the other things were in support of this. Nobody really knows what how any of this actually looked or how it was taught. There's a longstanding conception that traditional karate practice when it was 'te' consisted almost entirely of kata and makiwara training. I have no idea how accurate it is, or even who gave me that impression, but I'd be interested in knowing how true it is
