Wow that just happened!

I think you all where lucky he did not have a gun.
Good job on getting him
as the others have said a call to the police and the license number might have done the same thing but I understand the feeling of needing to catch him yourselves

Ok, I just have to clarify a few things about this story. First, I was wrong about the value of the jackets. They are $400 a peice, light high fashion leather womens jackets. Also there was another guy who they caught at the gas station at the end of the street who was with him, he had a warrent for his arrest.

Gun? Well of coarse this crossed all our minds as well. I was one of the last people to the van. The rest had followed him right up til he got in the van and then hesitated out of fear of what he might have had in the van. Seconds later I come around the corner and the only person touching the van is our 26 year old female clothing manager and she's standing at the drivers door pulling on the door handle. My first and main concern at this point is her saftey. I ran right up next to her looking for his hands though the window. One is on the door holding it closed and the other is on the keys. I also looked in the back to see if anyone was hiding back there and there wasn't. At this point I decided the safest thing for everyone was getting this guy out of this van.

The plates- The plates on the van turned out to be stolen. These guys were crack heads with long wrap sheets. It wasn't their first time doing this.

Let me again encourage you and the managers to work with some retail loss prevention specialists. There are lots of concerns in making a stop & detention, both for safety and legal protection. Years ago, Sears's internal LP training talked about a $10,000 baseball cap; because of the mistakes made during a detention over a $10 ball cap, the company ended up paying out a huge sum to settle a lawsuit.

If the business doesn't have an attorney on staff who can do it, there are consulting companies that will help you develop a good policy and plan that will protect everyone and the merchandise.

That's good advise. Thank you. I'll definately discuss it with the G.M.
