Why has the long boxing guard disappeared?

The initiator always has the advantage because they deal with 0 reaction time. While the one reacting needs to read the incoming strike, then move to intercept it. This means the one reacting needs to be magnitudes faster just to break even.
This is why one should use the long guard.

When you hold a spear, if your opponent wants to attack you, his attack has to pass your spear first. This will make his attack as 2 steps process - deal with your spear, and attack you. Since your opponent has to deal with your spear first, that will give you more reaction time.

The long guard is like to hold a spear. The short boxing guard is like to hold a shield.

But a hand, unlike a spear, is only dangerous with velocity. An outstretched arm must first be retracted before it can be driven forward, while also being right there to grab and pull while their other hand sails in to your now exposed face

The beauty of the spear technique is the clockwise circle and counter-clockwise circle.

To interrupt your opponent's incoming punches, you don't need to retract your arm. All you need is to rotate your arms - circle defeat line.

This is also the beauty of the double hooks with the same arm. The 1st hook deflect your opponent's straight punch. The 2nd hook punch on his face.

Well, I think it’s not an apt comparison. A sharp spearhead is quite lethal. That is one big issue in trying to get past it. You really do not have room for error. A fist is not a spearhead. It is not so instantly lethal. It is potentially easier to absorb a punch, or to otherwise engage with the fist in a long guard, without bleeding to death.
