What's the best counter for this?

Crossface, overlooking, sprawl.
Yea, it looked to me liked the puncher was a little gassed and really reached on the punch, leaving him with open for the takedown. So the best counter would be in the punch delivery/recovery IMHO.

We are talking about after your opponent has picked you off the ground.

Should you

- hang on?
- release your arms hold?
- release your legs hold?
- release both arms and legs hold?

The way that he refuses to let it go just make his situation worse.

Basic fight intelligence, I would think.

Hopefully, he'll seek it before the next time.

Just fyi, this is about 10 seconds into the first round. I really hope he wasn't gassed.

Uncross your legs. And put them on the ground?

yes all of those, or he could just punch him in the ear repeatly

Uncross your legs. Extend one leg between your opponent's groin. Extend the other leg back as far as you can (this leg ready to land). Push on your opponent's shoulders.

Like this? ....Didn't work out so well for Antaeus.
Like this?
