1 Killed, 2 Deputies Hurt in Shootout at Washington Wal-Mart

PORT ORCHARD, Wash. -- Kitsap County Sheriff Steve Boyer says one person was killed and two deputies wounded in a shooting at a Wal-Mart store in Port Orchard.

The conditions of the wounded are not immediately available.

Excuse me, but I spent some time on the East Coast, and you aren't supposed to look anyone in the eye. What the hell is that? The Northwest has to be one of the most mellow places a person can live.

Oh I dunno. 4 cops killed in a coffee shop. A chief recently killed responding to a robbery. This. If I recall correctly there were a few other instances over the past 2 years as well.

So far, you can count this all on one hand. There will always be crime and criminals, but it is not all that bad.

I don't think it's the NW, per say. Florida just took a heavy hit as well. But something ugly is simmering out there and I worry about my friends who wear the uniform.

Perhaps Archangel M missed the Arizona shooting.

Here is a map of violent crime stats - PNW has hot spots, but is generally average - nowhere near as bad as California, New Mexico and places *south.*

I personally think it was better before the population here exploded - everyone wants to live here because of the lower crime and pop levels.

The PNW is still one of the better places to live.
