What is this partner exercise called, and how does one do it?

Hello,

Once a week in my TKD class, we've been doing some partner drills for warm-up. For example, we'll sit back to back, interlock arms, and then stand up & sit down together. Or three of us will sit back to back and roll a certain direction. I guess it helps with coordination/teamwork.

Anyway, there's one exercise that we can never seem to do. I don't even know what it's called, so my Google search for help was fruitless. It involves sitting up with our legs out in front, feet to feet with our partner. Knees must be on the ground. We lean forward and hold one another's hands, and then try to stand up. Inevitably, we just end up pulling on one another's arms. Last time, my partner inadvertently strained my back. I'm old (45), and he's a healthy teenage boy.

In any case, is anyone familiar with this exercise? Can you enlighten me on what the trick is to cooperatively standing up?

I don't know a name for it. Usually we just say "partner up, sit down back to back, lock your arms, and work as a team to stand up."

I’ve seen and done the back to back ones, but not the sitting one with the legs straight.
I don’t know what it’s called, but I know what it should be called.

A very interesting cooperation challenge and it must be very difficult if your both pairs of feet are initially touching. Unless the balls of the feet are the pivot points and the heels are supposed to slide back which means the floor has to be slippery enough to allow one's heels to slide or else there would be no place for the feet to go as you stand up. I expect the best chance for success is finding a partner with the same size feet, physically strong yet flexible enough to extend their hands past their feet and have floor conditions that would allow the heels to slide into a standing position.

Have you ever seen anyone do this successfully ?
 
Toes first. We did this in JJJ when I was a kid. Talk to each other and coordinate joint to joint. It’s a great exercise!
Should we only touch toes and leave a gap in the arch/heel area? Like Yokozuna said, it seems impossible for the heels to slide back considering the dojang has soft, grippy mats.

We have done this setting position to stretch the back and hams out by pulling each other back and forth but never tried to stand from the same posture.
I suppose if each person was about the same weight/height it would be fairly easy, but I can't think of a benefit from it.

It’s a coordination exercise with a partner but I’ve only seen it in kids classes.

So without the lift, would a good name for it (for OP) be joint hamstring stretch? Typically when I've done joint hamstring stretches, it's been one person lies down with their leg up, and the other person helps them stretch/push, then swap roles, interested in how this would compare to that.

We mix it up and also do as you describe but the stretcher sets on the floor, and we push at the mid/lower back. Exceptionally flexible people get 'laid on' with the helping person's chest.
Doing it facing each other foot to foot is often predicated on size and how limber they are in the first place. Some people just cannot reach out far enough to grab the other persons hands.
