Does anybody allow there student to wear those no sleeve and short type of uniform and if so does your students like them at all? What is the pro's and con'a of having them?

During the summer, I let my students wear t-shirts in class, as long as there's nothing objectionable on them; otherwise, it's a full dobok. I don't see any reason to switch, and plenty o freasons not to - tradition and mindset being the primary two.

It would be absolute sacrilege to work out in anything but formal, full dobok in my school. Do do any less would get you ran out of town quick. Geez, dad and his class have a hottest day of the year and coldest day of the year workout that are just absolutely brutal.

My instructor's pretty informal, which I appreciate, because even in winter our training venue is hot, and muggy, with no circulation (even though the rooms are huge). The lattitude stops with the dobok top---you gotta have your dobok bottoms and your belt---but the top is optional, though the understanding is you WEAR it for belt tests and anything important.

Heheheheh.... judo tops for us in Matt's dad's hapkido class, even in the incredibly hot, humid Swampeast Missouri summers.

90 degrees, 90 percent humidity, or thereabouts. We do have fans upstairs that pull a nice breeze of fresh air through the room, though. But the air window air conditioning unit never gets turned on. It isn't even plugged in. He leaves it there just to taunt us :)

And then we celebrate the hottest workout day of the year with an extra difficult workout, as Matt noted above.

The rationale is, the day you must defend yourself may not be a comfortable day. It might be hot and muggy, maybe cold and windy (we do coldest day of the year workout with the heater turned off, door open, as well).

Pure hell to endure the hottest/coldest day of the year workouts, but having gone through them, you definately feel special. Like running a Boston marathon or something. Something to tell the grandkids about someday.

No short sleeves and no sleeves rolled up at my dojang. It is mostly about attitude, and respect for the uniformed appearance of the student. Also, I do not allow hats worn in the dojang, and shoes come off at the door (those who balk at these kinds of rules are exposing an attitude problem which is why I enforce the rules). In the summer, school t-shirts with school logo may be worn in place of the jacket, but the pants and belt are required to be from the dobok.

Every time I see any short sleeve uniforms, I think of those "Cobra Kai" jerks in the Karate Kid movie. Tough guys with bad attitudes.

I am a full dobok kind of instructor & student. However, I break this rule on the days I spar with my students. My current everyday uniform is sized a bit too small to fit my Tekno forearm/elbow guards, so I wear a sleeveless dobok top on sparring days. It takes me a bit longer to put on my sparring gear than most folks. The sleevesless top makes it that much easier for me.

*Here come the tomatoes headed in my direction.*

T-shirts are great for summer and demo type activities. Weapons don't get caught up in the sleaves.

Official uniform or school t-shirts only, when you are Brown and above there is a little more latitude in style.

Unless it is black belts practicing among themselves informally, in class you wear the official dobok regardless of climate. As mentioned, it goes back to respect for the Art you practice.

Outside of the annual Summer Camp where the camp t-shirt is allowed, we train only in full dobok.

I just received a Kwon catalogue a couple of days ago. Have any of you see the new 'TKD Shorts Uniform'?

(mental note to self: OK. Try to quit snickering.)

The last time I saw this was in Korea......on a kindergarten TKD group.

But these uniforms weren't for little kids.

No... don't stop giggling. Don't even try. Anyone who can look at that catalogue pic and not giggle uncontrollably has something wrong with them.

Somewhere out there is a martial arts apparel designer with really, really bad karma!...

Thanks for posting... I needed a good laugh :)

A Capri shorts uniform. Too much

I figure, the idea must be to get your opponent cracking up so hard he fails to notice your spinning back kick coming in to his solar plexus.

No?? Well, there has to be an explanation for that... thing. Anyone have a better one? :wink1:

Some vendors have tried to call this a "summer uniform". Whatcha think, Terry? You gonna rock one of those this summer?:)

For 1/10th that the Emperor will dance naked on the internet.
