Doboks or Uniforms

upnorthkyosa, I like the ideology behind your statement. It is a very deep one that I will be pondering for some time.

I agree. Nice post Upnorth ;)

Anyways, I have switched to ITF, but we wear the TSD style doboks. White for gup ranks, and white with black trim for BB's. We even have to wear a white t-shirt under our dobok, no other color (for women. Men don't have to wear a t-shirt). It's very strict. But I sweat a lot, and I asked if I can wear a white tank top instead. My instructor said ok, as long as it was white.

We came from the ITF, and wear white dobaks for the reason upnorthkyosa gave, and also because it helps to create a mindset - this is a time and place for TKD, not for the world to intrude, and having everyone dress alike (except for belts) helps with this.

KK1975, I don't know anything about a requirement for t-shirts, and I was in the USTF/ITF for a long time; t-shirts in the USTF were up to the instructor in class, and were never required for anyone, although they had to be plain white at events (testings, tournaments, etc.). I avoided t-shirts (I get heatsick fairly easily, and the extra layer just made it worse) and avoided having my top fall open by sewing velcro where the top crossed itself. During the summer, we wore t-shirts to work out (no AC, in an upstairs room with poor ventilation), but there were no real rules about what could be on them, as long as they weren't obscene, and I wore tank tops then.

That's a good idea Kacey. I will put velcro on my dobok as well. I asked my instructor (the first instructor I asked wasn't the main instructor). I was wrong on my last post. We can wear any t-shirt in class. But, like you said, it's tournies, testing, ect that we have to wear white. So I'll see if I can use velcro and just wear a sports bra under my dobok.

Do you allow your students to wear color uniforms and if so when doe you let them start, at a certain belt rank or from the start of there training?

You know what.. I love uniforms. But some part of me says to make anyone under Mastery to wear sweatpants and a stupid tshirt.
