‘That’ Person

Actually, there is a kind of fishing called trolling as opposed to trawling. Trawling is saltwater fishing where you drag a huge net behind the boat. 'Trolling' is where you drag a lure behind a moving boat in the hopes of getting a bite, usually from a trout. When I first heard about it I thought it was going to be awesome, but I quickly found that your odds of actually catching a fish that way were pretty minimal.
Depends on where you are and what season. Trolling is the preferred method for certain game fish. Three of my friends got 88 albacore in one day last year.

And to bring this back to the reason we are talking about trolling:

This is internet trolling.

This is a fool’s choice. Everyone knows you’re making stuff up to stir the pot. And it’s not that your position is wrong, unworthy, or immoral. It’s that everything you post is disingenuous.

And to be clear, the only real issue here is that it sure does make it hard to figure out what you actually think, and watching folks try to interact with you is an exercise in futility. You will take multiple positions in a thread and contradict yourself. And when pressed, you either get sarcastic, make a joke, or post a non sequitor.

All of this would be different if anything you write were sincere.

Alright, then. Carry on. I’m sure I’m the only one who finds it annoying. 😅
I can’t understand why you care so much. He must have really gotten under your skin, or something else is bothering you? You could just ignore him.

Oh. Sorry.

I guess we were coming at it from different angles, you're talking about the nice sensations of watersports.

I've had to rescue people drowning so that's where I was going with that. Nothing like trying to pump water out of someone's lungs so they don't die from aspiration. It's literally the worst noise I've ever heard.
It’s not a nice sensation to be pummeled underwater in my opinion. Hey I get it, fishing is tough work for tough men, you don’t need to convince me. I’m not arguing with you. Helping to save people from dying in real time is part of what I do for a living, gruesome work is part of the deal. The big reward is helping people, it’s what we play for.

Sounds pretty awful.

@Wing Woo Gar I'll respond in DM. A little more appropriate. :)

Don't care THAT much, but it's an irritant. There are people you run into in business who think they're the smartest person in the room. Generally, they're pretty benign. But in meetings, when they ask questions just to stir the pot, it becomes annoying. It wastes time as people feel compelled to respond to them, even though they know it's disingenuous. I find this behavior unproductive and a waste of time. I hope that explains it a little better.

I mostly do ignore him. :) Thanks for your concern, but all things considered, all is well on my end. You seem to enjoy his posting style, and that's fine with me. Different strokes and all that. :D
I work with a lot of big egos in surgery. I am often a captive audience for hours at a time, so I can sympathize with your reasoning. I mostly enjoy everyone’s posting style here, but we (myself included) can all be irritating at times. I can be rather volatile and aggressive as well, although I often shame myself as a result. I strive to be sincere unless I’m just joking around. I will need to try to take my own advice here and say it’s not worth getting upset about internet posts.

Off the coast where we live, if you're offshore recreational fishing, you're either trolling or bottom fishing an artificial reef. We don't have commercial fisherman trolling here. We catch the crap out of mahi by trolling. The most fun is when you see a flock of birds diving in the water and troll around that as there'll be a giant ball of bait fish and predators feeding on them. You reel in fish as fast as you can get lines out. It's like you see on those nature documentaries. An acre or two of water boiling at the surface cause of all the fish underneath. It. Is. Awesome.

Sorry, surfing and rafting have nothing on saltwater fishing. Not even close, my friend.

Have you ever sailed into a squall to make your daily bread?

You think watersports are humbling? Try surviving a storm at sea.

Again, I apologize in advance if I come across harsh but damn, if you know anything about the sea, you'd never throw out surfing or rafting. That's landlubber games.

The Perfect Storm was a good film, but the book was one of the scariest things I’ve ever read.

Right now I’m reading The Lobster Coast by Colin Woodward. About the history of commercial fishing and lobstering in Maine.
Really good book.

My son in law's family is from that area, and one of his relatives... great, great grandfather, I think... was a notorious fisherman who ranged from Nova Scotia down to Massachusetts. Someone wrote a book about him in the 1960s called "The Bear of the Sea."

A good yarn... dude was bigger than life. And a lot of detail about that era of commercial fishing on the East Coast.

I’ll have to read that, thanks for the tip.
Man, Gloucester has the coldest water I’ve ever been in.

Cape Ann can get pretty icy. I come from an old whaling family from around those parts, Nantucket etc.

I keep a map of the whole peninsula in my bathroom

If you look closely just southwest of Gloucester Harbor, you'll see a little reef called Norman's Woe, which has killed so many sailors, Longfellow wrote a poem about it.

What species do you target?
I don't do as much nowadays but over the years, Atlantic cod (my favorite), mackerel, bluefish, and even some lobster. Was never much of a deep sea big game fisherman myself, too much damage work, heh. And the waters off the Cape are still pristine fishing but it's so packed and busy now, not like it used to be. It's gotten a little touristy there but good luck showing up in a local bar and not looking like a towney, you might get f'd up if you're not careful, they DGAF.

But I can cook any fish perfectly. My favorite thing to serve up, but I stopped cooking inside the house decades ago. Outdoor grilling and smoking only. If you ever want a good fish recipe hit me up.

My wife’s family has a lot of old time lobstermen from Cohasset and Gloucester.
Made for some great cookouts every summer when we were young.

Hey ask if she knows the Olson clan. Not my personal family but we are very close, my family and theirs were old WWII air, sea, and of course drinking buddies.

That whole span between Gloucester, Salem and Cohasset (f Boston ha) was sort of my proving ground as a younger man. I read Moby Dick caught the sea bug hard. I hate sharks but love the ocean, tough mix, they still run the place especially around the sandbars. Whites have been all over the last few years making the fishing harder and swimming dangerous.

Retirement goal #1 is a boat of my own, but that's a long way off. But I have this idea about chartering wealthy folks and bringing them out there to do whatever they want and just get handed fat piles of cash. I can make a killer smoked salmon dip. Ever watched "Below Deck? Love that show. When you can do every job from stew to deck to engineer to captain, you feel sort of blessed.

I guess we're really getting "awf tawpic" so I apologize to the mawds. And to Gyakuto for being a dick. Wasn't all you, your thread just got under my usually thicker skin.

"Seek calm within thine own storm", just some old wisdom I was given once by a true wizard of the sea.

I will ask her.

The lobstermen in her family were the Figueredos.

What’s your favorite way to do halibut and salmon? Neither need much help IMO. I’d love to hear your recipes because these are two most common fish around here other than rock fish.
