Actually, there is a kind of fishing called trolling as opposed to trawling. Trawling is saltwater fishing where you drag a huge net behind the boat. 'Trolling' is where you drag a lure behind a moving boat in the hopes of getting a bite, usually from a trout. When I first heard about it I thought it was going to be awesome, but I quickly found that your odds of actually catching a fish that way were pretty minimal.

Depends on where you are and what season. Trolling is the preferred method for certain game fish. Three of my friends got 88 albacore in one day last year.

And to bring this back to the reason we are talking about trolling:


This is internet trolling.


This is a fool’s choice. Everyone knows you’re making stuff up to stir the pot. And it’s not that your position is wrong, unworthy, or immoral. It’s that everything you post is disingenuous.

And to be clear, the only real issue here is that it sure does make it hard to figure out what you actually think, and watching folks try to interact with you is an exercise in futility. You will take multiple positions in a thread and contradict yourself. And when pressed, you either get sarcastic, make a joke, or post a non sequitor.

All of this would be different if anything you write were sincere.

I can’t understand why you care so much. He must have really gotten under your skin, or something else is bothering you? You could just ignore him.

I've had to rescue people drowning so that's where I was going with that. Nothing like trying to pump water out of someone's lungs so they don't die from aspiration. It's literally the worst noise I've ever heard.

It’s not a nice sensation to be pummeled underwater in my opinion. Hey I get it, fishing is tough work for tough men, you don’t need to convince me. I’m not arguing with you. Helping to save people from dying in real time is part of what I do for a living, gruesome work is part of the deal. The big reward is helping people, it’s what we play for.

Don't care THAT much, but it's an irritant. There are people you run into in business who think they're the smartest person in the room. Generally, they're pretty benign. But in meetings, when they ask questions just to stir the pot, it becomes annoying. It wastes time as people feel compelled to respond to them, even though they know it's disingenuous. I find this behavior unproductive and a waste of time. I hope that explains it a little better.

I mostly do ignore him. Thanks for your concern, but all things considered, all is well on my end. You seem to enjoy his posting style, and that's fine with me. Different strokes and all that.

I work with a lot of big egos in surgery. I am often a captive audience for hours at a time, so I can sympathize with your reasoning. I mostly enjoy everyone’s posting style here, but we (myself included) can all be irritating at times. I can be rather volatile and aggressive as well, although I often shame myself as a result. I strive to be sincere unless I’m just joking around. I will need to try to take my own advice here and say it’s not worth getting upset about internet posts.

Off the coast where we live, if you're offshore recreational fishing, you're either trolling or bottom fishing an artificial reef. We don't have commercial fisherman trolling here. We catch the crap out of mahi by trolling. The most fun is when you see a flock of birds diving in the water and troll around that as there'll be a giant ball of bait fish and predators feeding on them. You reel in fish as fast as you can get lines out. It's like you see on those nature documentaries. An acre or two of water boiling at the surface cause of all the fish underneath. It. Is. Awesome.

But we're crazy here. People will happily take a 20ft boat 70 miles offshore to reach the Gulfstream.

Again, I apologize in advance if I come across harsh but damn, if you know anything about the sea, you'd never throw out surfing or rafting. That's landlubber games.

My son in law's family is from that area, and one of his relatives... great, great grandfather, I think... was a notorious fisherman who ranged from Nova Scotia down to Massachusetts. Someone wrote a book about him in the 1960s called "The Bear of the Sea."
