I have been busting out the single-leg during sparring against people who aren't familiar with it. It typically catches them super off guard and is a good setup for a sweep.

Would a single-leg grab into a calf kick/sweep be useful in self defense?

Relatively quick, you finish standing while your opponent finishes on the floor, and you can typically control positioning. Pretty much everything you could want.

Only issues would be if you mess up the sweep afterwards you're stuck tangled with them either standing up or on the floor, but that's what training is for.

We do this in Eskrido also with an emphasis on weapon isolation/retention. Makes it a bit more complicated. Fun stuff.

If your opponent

- punches you, you grab his leg and take him down.
- kicks you, you grab his leg and take him down.
- does nothing, you still grab his leg and take him down.

Grab your opponent's leg, take him down, and then take off is a good street fight strategy.
