Overweight here???

Hey Rob, congrats on the weight loss. That's some serious disipline to go from 300 to 190. How tall are you?

I'm about 5'10". Unfortunately, over the last few years I quit teaching and training at the school I was at and then got married, so some of that weight has come back. I need to refocus and get off the couch. It's just so hard when you come home from work and your beautiful wife has made you a nice big dinner. The nice thing though, is I know I can do it, because I've done it before.

Manny,
No you are not alone. My hubby is 5'10 and 250'ish. He's about the biggest guy in our dojo but he's staying with it. He's trying to lose 40+ lbs. I think that it's great that he's doing TKD with the kids no matter what. He just got his yellow belt but it's one step at a time.
I should also add that he's one of the oldest too. Most of our dojo are kids with the exception of 6 of us. 7 if you count the instructor.

Are here any gorditos (fat boys)? I'm in TKD classes to get in shape, gain healt and because I love TKD.

I'm 6' tall and 260 pounds, I have lost with a diet almost 20 punds but need to work out about 40 punds or so more.

It seems all the practiciones of MA are always in shape but don't know if I'm an isolate case.

Manny

If TKD was for people in shape there would be very few people doing TKD :)

6' 5'' and 323 here. A few months ago I had ballooned to 348. But I've started training again after moving and getting a job out college. Working hard and jogging, etc have shed those 25 with a lot more to go.

After three or four sprinting phases, the fifth one looks like the gates of Hell just over the horizon, and a few more down the road and you're ready to have someone put you out of your misery.

That's accurate I'd say! I always end fartlek running by looking in the mirror at my bright red face and being glad it's over. I always do it on anti-inflammatories too.

Cardio! Cardio! Cardio!

I lost over 50 lbs with a combination of Tae Kwon Do and cardio. I am up to 6-7 miles a day on the elyptical machine, 7 days a week. I push it hard, this is in about 50-55 minutes.

To do accurately do cardio at a rate for weight loss you first have to work out your heart rate levels.

The way to do this is to take your age from 220 for your Maximum Heart Rate (MHR), or use this formula which is more accurate.

The Miller formula: MHR=217 - (0.85 × age)
Subtract 3 beats for elite athletes under 30
Add 2 beats for 50 year old elite athletes
Add 4 beats for 55+ year old elite athletes
Use this MHR value for running training
Subtract 3 beats for rowing training
Subtract 5 beats for bicycle training

There are three main zones of training

The Aerobic Zone 70 - 80% of the MHR
Training in this zone will develop your cardiovascular system. The body's ability to transport oxygen to, and carbon dioxide away from, the working muscles can be developed and improved. As you become fitter and stronger from training in this zone it will be possible to run some of your long weekend runs at up to 75%, so getting the benefits of some fat burning and improved aerobic capacity.

The Anaerobic Zone 80-90% of the MHR
Training in this zone will develop your lactic acid system. In this zone, your individual anaerobic threshold is found - sometimes referred to the point of deflection (POD). During these heart rates, the amount of fat being utilised as the main source of energy is greatly reduced and glycogen stored in the muscle is predominantly used. One of the by-products of burning this glycogen is lactic acid. There is a point at which the body can no longer remove the lactic acid from the working muscles quickly enough. This is your anaerobic threshold or POD. Through the correct training, it is possible to delay the POD by being able to increase your ability to deal with the lactic acid for a longer period of time or by pushing the POD higher.

The Red Line 90-100% of MHR
Training in this zone will only be possible for short periods. It effectively trains your fast twitch muscle fibres and helps to develop speed. This zone is reserved for interval running and only the very fit are able to train effectively within this zone.

So you need to keep your workouts at 70-80% for good fat burning. Fartlek training works both Aerobic and Anaerobic at the same time intensifying the results. It's damn hard work though and if you can't hack it, go for Aerobic.

Oh and a heart rate monitor would help too.

I agree with Exile and Shaderon... However, to take it easy at first, and make sure you've ok'd it with your doctor. Always keep an eye on your heart rate, too. You don't want to have your heart rate get too high, drink plenty of water, and when you stop running, don't stop at once- turn it down to a light jog first.

Manny,

Thanks for starting a really good post. I have often said if you want to know how to loose weight don't ask the skinny people - they never had to try before :).

I am like most of the people who replied - I started taking with my son who is 6. I figured why sit on the chair and watch when I can take at the same time and get me moving around a little. The good thing is that after 6 months I am now more motivated to eat better and start going to the gym - so that my sidkick has a chance of landing a little higher than someones knee :)

So my question to all of the bigger guys is: Have you found a Gi / uniform that you like better than others. I know I will have to hem the legs as I am not 7'2" - which seems to be the height of the peoplethat need a size 8. (I am just short for my weight I guess:)) I have a basic one that fits but would like something a little breathable/flexible.

Thanks for any help you might have.

Weightwatchers.

If you can't go to meetings, do it on the web. Combine their program with m. a. discipline and it will be very successful. I let myself lard up horribly; between WW and TKD, I'm working on losing my second 30 pound goal.

I had a few extra pounds, but training and healthy eating is the only way. The trick is, exercise more than you eat. If you eat heaps, you exercise to make up for it. Less work if you just eat what you need and not more.

Though this thread has made me hungry *goes to fridge*

You might want to check out:

I have never purchased from them but they say they are the only ones who make a "plus size" dobak. They also seem to sell out fast when they have them so don't wait.

Somehow, I found myself at almost 260 a few years ago. Since then I've cut out soda, added tons of water and more exercise etc. It's helped immensely.

I've eliminated all soda pop from my diet and I cannot believe how much weight I recently lost because of it..

Some quotes to ponder:

I can do TaeKwon-Do, that's not the problem, it's keeping in shape!

It takes a good man to kick my butt, not very long, but it still takes a good man.

If TKD was for people in shape, there wouldn't be anyone in TKD.

I went to a class with Bill (Superfoot) Wallace and there were a bunch of hard core health nuts there and they kept drilling him about his diet. They asked him what he liked to eat when he was training. He replied, "Big Mac, fries, Coke... If your going to train then your going to train. Most the time a students excuses are about working out more instead of what you eat. If your going to train... then train"

Well, round is a shape, isn't it?

You might try a KI gi.

I had an REI middle or heavy weight gi that I used for years, I kept growing (expanding :)) and of course my gi didn't. One night old faithful gave up when I split the crotch out during class. Anyway I went to the local MA store and said I needed a size 7 KI gi and it seemed way to big for me, but that was what my REI was. I was told that the KI gi is made a size bigger so a 7 is more like an 8. I ended up getting a size 6 and the jacket still seems big on me.

I wish I would have known that when I bought a white heavy weight KI size 7 last year for an promotion exam, the jacket hangs down almost to my knees. I always thought it was long but that is what size my other gi was that I wore so I went with it and had the pants altered prior to ever trying them on.
