Sometimes I tend to lose balance or land awkwardly when throwing a spinning hook kick. The shoulder twist, the spotting, the hip snap and the hook snap seem to be alright, but my weight kept mysteriously shifting backward. Having no instructor at the immediate moment I went on YouTube demonstrations and took notes (not actual notes, you get the point). That was when I thought: "hey, it's not like extension of the supporting leg is important in any way to the stability of the kick, right? Heh he... Heh... Ha..."
I put on the lights, moved my office chair and started kicking again. Turns out it did matter and near all my kicks at least look perfect (if were flexible enough to kick above head height it would be better). Learning every day.

Yes, I know. The best I can get are pointers from my MMA instructor(s) and taekwondo black belts I know.
