I'm chronically online

A post from 2006, 18 years ago!
I know this was done before but I don't remember if symptoms were posted

I came across this, ironically, while I was online, but I don't see a problem with that.

Symptoms of an internet addict

1. Lying about how much time is spent online.
2. General decrease of physical activity and social life.
3. Neglecting obligations at home, work, or school to spend time online.
4. Spending too much money on computer equipment or Internet activities.
5. Feeling a constant desire to be online when they're away from the computer.
6. Going online to escape real world problems.
7. Disregarding the emotional or physical consequences of being in front of a computer all day.
8. Denial of the problem.

#8 on that list is one of the biggest issues that I have with these things. It'd be much better to say something like "Annoyed about others discussing the issue". Otherwise, it's just kind of a useless add-on.

It reminds me of an issue I had with the alcohol abuse screening test from a clinic I worked at. You had to get something like 8* points for us to say you had an issue and recommend (and I use the word recommend loosely) treatment, most social drinkers would get like 3 or 4 on the scale. But for the version we used, the final question involved if you'd ever been to treatment, or any sort of AA/NA meeting ever, for any reason, and that would give an automatic 4 points. So if you were a social drinker who ever went to one out of curiosity, or to support someone else, or because you wanted to see if it was something you might be concerned about (which is a common recommendation, and many people without issues or very low issues have done), you're halfway to needing treatment.

Another fun one was a paper by a known health org. that recommended as a way to determine if you have a problem or not, count your drinks for a month, to see if it's more than you expect, or go a month without drinking and see how difficult it is. Then at the bottom of the article, it went over different signs saying if you've done X, y or z you likely have a problem. And two of those things were counting your drinks, or trying to go for periods without drinking.

*Numbers are my best recollection.
