With all the discussion of late regarding being prepared for the worst possible case scenario and arming yourself on the steet and in your home, it has led me to ask the question as to how safe you truly feel in your neighborhood.

Although I live in "murder capital of canada" I really honestly feel quite safe in my neighborhood. I live in a small community that, with the exception of my work, I rarely have to leave because I have access to all my needs within 10 minutes of my home. I do lock my doors before I go out because there have been home break ins and such, but I don't "worry" constantly when I leave home that something bad is going to happen. I take precautions with my children, I know where they are and who they are with and I make sure they are being transported safely from point A to point B.

What about you? Is your worry to a paranoia point or do you fell relatively safe or fall somewhere inbetween?

i live on campus i feel fairly safe, unless its night and i get stuck in the back lot, then just to be smart i call security for an escorte but thats mainly because we have sex offenders living near by (or so my deans say) and id rather be on the careful side then the raped side

In general our neighborhood always seemed safe until one day a neighbor shot his father and then himself! Afterward it was discovered there was a whole arsenal of weapons in the house and the kid had a mental illness and could have snapped at any time.
Anything can happen to anyone at anytime!

In our immediate neighborhood, my wife & I both feel quite safe. I work a mile from home in a neighborhood that has gang activity. We built the community center there intentionally to give the kids an alternative to the gang life. Because I deal with gang members in my job, I feel quite safe in the neighborhood. The boxing program at the Center is run by former gang members. They get a lot of respect from the kids. Its a relatively safe place.

However, I've told my wife not to come at night. And we always use the "buddy system" going to our cars at night. Yup, both guys & gals.

The buddy system is a great idea! That reminds me to talk about that more often! Thanks!

Well first off I feel very safe in my nieghborhood mainly because I live there HA!HA! on the serious side the buddy system is always best way of added protection.

Considering my nearest neighbor is about one and a half miles away, I feel very safe where I live. Where I work and who I end up working with is another story though.

Quite safe, and I've had murders happen within walking distance of where I live now, and the last place I lived. My brother got mugged once, no one got hurt, they just pulled a knife and took his guitar. Still felt safe.

Things happen everywhere, it sucks, but can't live your life in fear. People get killed driving, I still drive. BBQ's blow up, I still like using them, people get hit by lighting, I still walk oustside in the rain without fearing getting struck.

I work in a rough area, still feel safe. We got former gang members in here all the time, people with criminal records, violence in there history. Still feel quite safe.

I've worked in pretty rough areas since I was 16, never have I wished I had a weapon I could pull out. I've been threatened, yelled at, dealt with people drunk, drugged, and brains fried from sniffing. Never wished I had a weapon, figure pulling one would have made things worse and it would have gotten violent.

I live in a neighborhood with its share of grit, but not horrible. I've had people mess with me, both in this and other neighborhoods where I used to live. Never got hurt. Never felt unsafe enought to want to carry a weapon.

Sure, you look around and make sure you are aware of your surroundings. I think this is reasonable. But i've never felt paranoid about the possibility of danger.

Im just fine in my little East Bay away from San Fran. Nothing ever happens except heart attacks and stuff....So ya I'm pretty good to go for another 40 years.

I live in a small town. When the weather hits 50°, and maybe its here now--Spring that is--then alot of people get out and walk and that's at night too. But we lock our home doors, car doors etc. Since meth invaded, there seems to be alot of break-ins in homes. I think that happens more when no one is apparently there for a long time. We also have a home alarm system when we leave--beams, windows wired, all that. When we are home, we have the four legged alarm system-double barreled. My black poodle even decided he didn't like the new Culligan guy and started biting his jeans at the ankle.

Downtown where the dojang is another thing. We have four bars on the street and three others nearby. Why that was sanctioned by the city council, I have no clue, except there must be alot of people who like beer, etc. after work to support them. So I use precautions going in and out at night especially when I'm locking up. TW

I feel safe in my neighborhood, yes - but that doesn't stop me from being careful. I lock my door, keep my car in my garage (one of my neighbors left his car running - stupid as that was - and went back into the house for something, and in that 30 seconds someone stole his car), look around when I walk in the park, know who is new in the area, and so on.

I also have a 4-legged alarm - but I hope he never has to do more than alarm, because there's been a rash of dogs killed (shot or poisoned) by thieves in the area. Besides, 80 pounds or not, my dog alarm is loud... but a coward. It's a good thing he's cute!

Very safe. We've only had a few bad occurances in my neighborhood, so I...wait a minute. Those were at my house. I guess I'm not the one who should be answering the question. Sorry. Carry on.

Hello, Our neighborhood is consider a safe place to live. A few years ago, a police officer shot his wife in the face 11 times. His sister is my classmate. They were having problems.

We have the usually prolbems like all neighborhoods. But you can walk and jog anywhere here, people do it all the time ,day and nights.

Going to the markets and banks presents no problems anytime too!

Our place is consider a middle class hard working people neighborhood.

We have beautiful sand beaches nearby to swim, snorkel, and if the waves are breaking, body surfing too. The fishing is great.

When would you like to come here? ...........Aloha

I used to live in a neighborhood that was a couple of blocks from a worse area. During the time I lived there, there was a murder on each corner of the block I lived on. I was always cautious if I had to go thru the bad area after dark, but overall I can't say it made me feel like I was in a dangerous place.

So, how does next week sound? Can you put a family of four up? :D

Still Learning, may I ask which island you live on?

My Father-in-Law lives in Pahoa on the Big Island - poor area, but he loves it there, built his own shack. Also owns an apartment on Oahu.

Haven't been to Maui, but spent the best part of my honeymoon on Kauaii - is the flooding ebbing yet?

Anyway, we were visiting my father in law on Hawaii and we all went to a warm springs park where our rental car was broken in to. So were about 10 other cars ... there was a LOOOOONG line at the police department counter that day. About a year ago, he was relaxing in a lawn chair at the SAME PARK when he was stabbed in an attempted mugging. Luckily, he carries a walking stick with him, sometimes a pipe for a stick (shudder) ... well, he sustained some permanent damage from the knife attack ... but not likely as much as his attacker did from the pipe to the head.

Crime is everywhere, I think. Different kinds in different areas, sometimes ....
