Why Balisongs?

What sort of techniques or advantages are unique to the balisong?
Quicky deployment sure. Maybe using it like a palmstick when closed. But anything else? Using it to catch a blade or something? Anyone seen or know anything else like this?
I searched youtube, but all I got was fancy play,looked awesome, but nothing substantial.
