Do You Even Train?

I do forms and/or bag work at home 3-4 days a week. I teach 3 days a week.

no not my clown out fit, yes I'm big and intense and robust. They think I'm going to hurt them, which some times i do by accident, but only coz they are snowflakes. If you don't want knocking on the floor don't come to a ma class or at least don't hold a focus pad on your chest for me to punch

It's one thing to bit rough, and something else altogether to be an over-the top jerk or bully. And I don't just don't get that vibe from you. So I'm going with the "snowflakes" explanation. ;)

thanks, I'm just play fighting with them, ,

Just curious. Whenever I see a "Members in Motion" video, I always take a look at it. Because first, it takes a bit of courage to post a video. Second, no matter what my opinion of the video happens to be, at least the person is training.

Sometimes I get the feeling that not that many people on MT actually train. I've met a few in person; I know they train. I'm not so sure about some of y'all.
Certainly not the way I used to. I spend about an hour a day hitting the bag and shadow boxing, and go in once a week for a 4 hour sparring/pads session with my group.
I do a really slow slt in the morning when I wake up each day(takes 9-10 mins) because it puts me in focus for the rest of the day.

Like you I'm completely sure some posters here have never devoted a serious moment to training in their lives based on what they say here, but that's none of my business.

Depending on the week/how busy I am, I'm in a dojo 2-4 times a week. The amount of time I spend there is 1-3 (on the rare occasion 4) hours, depending how motivated/lazy I'm feeling. If I don't want to do anything, I make sure I go for at least one hour just to prevent me from getting into a habit of skipping.

Why do you get the feeling not that many people here train? There are definitely some I have doubts about, but most of the people here seem to me like they either train currently, or have trained in the past.

I'm not getting in as much as I would like to, but so far this week I've spent 3 hours teaching and 4 hours training. On Saturday I should get in another hour of teaching and 2-3 hours training, making a total of 4 hours teaching and 6-7 hours training for the week. I'm not counting the hours spent studying videos or picking an instructor's brain after class. Probably got at least a couple of hours doing those so far this week. Not the same as mat time, but it helps.

He actually said that? Hillarious! Is it because you are so intense about training? ...or so cantankerous? ...or do you just show up for class in that creepy evil clown outfit? :D
I wouldn't call that hilarious at all...its pretty disgusting to be honest that his instructor tells him not to train with beginners because he scares them....that's nothing to be proud of at all in all honesty he should be ashamed

Agreed nothing funny at all about it

I do...

You can check out my albums. I don't post videos, because I don't know if I'm allowed. We have a Facebook page called "Ninkai Bujutsu". We're not a big class, because the scope for martial arts here in South Africa isn't that broad like in the US, or Japan - sadly.

I wanted to surround myself with MORE like-minded individuals, which is why I joined this website. Though we cannot congregate & have conversations on a physical level, we can still stimulate the mind. So I guess that's about as good as it will get for me. :p

I have wondered the exact same thing in all honesty... :D:rolleyes::happy:

I train x3 p/week.

Gym 3x p/w
Horse riding 2x p/w

I know it's irrelevant, but since everyone is including cardio & weights... o_O

I agree. When I saw the title and Bill's name attached to it, I was thinking he was asking the instructors if they actually train anymore and how often. I thought it would be along the lines of "with all the time you spend teaching, how often do you actually line up and take class?"

Teachers can get into the rut of teaching so often that they neglect their own training. Some teachers may have teachers that they don't see very often due to proximity, conflicting class schedules, etc. Some may not have a teacher anymore.

My teacher makes it over to our honbu (headquarters) dojo about once a month for class, in addition to various clinics and helping with black belt tests. He also accompanies all of his students testing for black belt ranks. We're 2.5 hours away, so it's not like he can drop by whenever he feels like it. He's been in our organization for 45 years or so, so it not like he's learning a ton of stuff every time he goes. It's more about him staying current with any changes, getting any relevant information he needs, and perhaps seeing a different way to teach what he's been teaching for so long.

I didn't initially think it was (paraphrasing) "do you post here even though you don't train MA at all." I'm pretty sure most posters are training. Some might not train as often as others, but with the exception of CB Jones who's said many times he doesn't train, but his son does, I don't see it being an issue here. And CB Jones is a LEO, so he does in fact use and see a lot of the things discussed here.

Ah Bill. Are you looking to do a bit of fraud busting here on MT? :)

For many years I was obsessive about my training, often hitting as much as 16-20 hours a week. When my son was born close to four years ago, my priorities with my time and energy changed and my training took a backseat. For the past three years i have trained very little. Family needs and some other obligations, and an injury just did not allow for training, so it was sporadic at best.

I am making an effort to build my training habit again. I miss it, and I am a better person when I am doing it. Other obligations are still there, but I'm starting to carve out 3-5 hours a week again.

I doubt I'll ever go back to the 20 hour weeks again, I no longer have the desire to do that, nor the time or energy.

Training should enhance your life. You should not become a slave to the training.

In hindsight, at times I may have been a slave to my training. But that's ok, at that time of my life it worked.

If we define

1. training - develop new skill.
2. maintenance - maintain old skill,

then I don't "train" any more and I just "maintain". I don't expect what I do today can be better than what I did yesterday. I just want what I do today won't be worse than what I did yesterday.

If you don't use it, you will lose it. You can not afford not to "train (or maintain)".
I think that just about says it all, right there.

The beauty of a home studio I train when I want now..............

ZYHuN0x.jpg

I'm no longer a member of any martial art but keeping to myself as a private practioner of Kung-Fu, Wing Chun, some Boxing and Kick-Boxing knowledge, Aiki Jui-Jitsu and finished in Jeet Kune Do and put those skills into practice as much as I can nowadays.

I also keep adding things to my studio the above picture is an old picture a few years back when I just finished painting the walls and concrete floor.

I will be adding more things and putting things up on the walls eventually as well.

Would like to add:-

  • A chin up bar like this - http://www.dshop.com.au/assets/full/HD-5001.jpg
  • Speed double end ball
  • 5ft long kickboxing bag
  • Cooling and Heating connections to the main system via duct work in ceiling
  • ..............are but some things that I will be adding soon and more through the years.

So most of my private training incorporates a variety of things that I do like for example:-

  1. Stretches - Flexibility Conditioning.
  2. Exercises - Mobility Conditioning
  3. Light Weights - Strength Conditioning
  4. Relaxation and Recovery - Natural healing Conditioning Qi Gong training and other methods
  5. Wooden Dummy Drills and Conditioning
  6. Sparring or training with others when possible
  7. Practice Form, Drills and Sets and Kata's
  8. Kali Arnis stick fighting drills and other wooden weapon drills and exercises etc
  9. Kicks, Punches and other movement
  10. 30km Bike Runs on my Trek 800 Mountain bike will eventually get a GoPro and hook up for video recordings and post on Youtubes I have been wanting this for sometime now but kids get first pick at Christmas stuff ......rrrrr LoL.......wanting new tech toys etc
  11. In my studio I have small TV-DVD Combo (you can see in picture above) where I watch past recorded sessions and other tutorial training stuff from DVD or USB sticks guiding me as there is heaps to remember also using the mirrors that you can see in the above picture to observe my own movements so on and put make up and play dress up's hahaha
  12. I also record videos on my Sony Digital8 Handycam on tripod some training sessions for future use by my son and daughter E.g Hubud or Chi-Sao .....so on.
  13. I change things around allot using weekly planners with various routines so on.
  14. and other stuff that I put into play or do when training........... like sweating LoL

All mainly to stay in good personal health or shape and keeping fit and enjoying what I have learned over the years and sharing with my family, simply just good fun and memories.

I either train every day in the early morning or late afternoons or small breaks inbetween on weekends if I'm bored, this saves time going to gyms and training at kwoons/dojo etc

Sometimes for full 3hrs or just 30-45 min sessions whatever my body tells me or feel up to sometimes I just don't train at all then get back into it.

Lately I have been training my son various things and thats proving to be a little difficult and testing my abilities to teach and be patient as his level of commitment varies from day to day but his only 11 can't wait to his at least 15 then hopefully will get more done.

So I am a martial artist at heart and forever...................

So who else has there own personal training studio?

Please share your workout plans and studio layout if any would e good to get ideas.

Master Wong's Youtubes gives me ideas he has got a great layout. I haven't done much on the outside backyard area its more just social and eating areas than a training area with a big shed at the back of the land but that will change also with time, but watch Mr Wongs training area...........

I love all that stuff he has and would use it most definitely! ;)

I need more $$$$$ and TIME thats the agony!

So I welcome any ideas...........

I don't train as much as I'd like to. I teach three times a week, and get in some solo training time before classes two of those days (the other is an early morning, and I'll be damned if I'm leaving my coffee one minute early!). Lately, I've had very little training time - having some tendinitis issues (just had blood drawn yesterday to rule out anything systemic) that keep me from being very active. Right now I have some in a lower leg that keeps me from running or even significant hiking, some in both elbows to reduce much lifting or hitting, and in a rotator cuff to reduce what I can do on the mats.

But all that is only reducing what I wasn't doing enough of, anyway. I get back to my old school once or twice a month, but end up helping teach as much as training. When I have project time near another school in SC, I get more training time there. With my travel for work and a business to work on, I haven't been able to see clear to taking on something new (have been eyeing a gym that has both boxing and BJJ). At the very least, once I get my injuries under control, I need to get back to fitness training and spending more time on my own doing bag work and such.

So, the short answer is, "Yes, but not nearly enough."

well i think its amusing, if i was scaring women and children you might have a point, but grown men, it say more about them than me, its not like I'm hurting them,, they are snow flakes that go to learn to fight, but ANY even light contact scares them,

i think at least part of it is realising how helpless they are, when a skinny bloke 30 years older than them can throw them around like,a rag, doll. And, i do apparently look scary, its my gangsta vibe, but hell that's just the way i look, it has its upsides, that gangsta types say hi and a good few women like the,bad boy look,

If he was dead serious, I would have to agree with you guys. I took it as a joking, over-the-top exaggeration. I don't know Jobo. Perhaps he is ....a psycho clown? But until I have evidence to the contrary, I always tend to look at things in a more positive way. :)

I'm rarely sure how to take his posts of this nature, Geezer. Either he's unintentionally bullying, or finds it amusing to "punch up" the story (which most of us do). If he's punching up the story, I'm missing it. If he's unintentionally bullying, I'm missing some indicators of that. Either way, I'm missing something.
