Here is a review of the plans the council of foreign relations has to roll Canada, the United States and Mexico into a single entity. It includes the people of Mexico rolled into social security, U.S. taxpayers paying the college education expenses for Mexicans and other plans.

There is no discussion of whether the Bill of Rights, Constitutional freedoms or other U.S. laws will stay intact. Apparently a tribunal is planned to iron out differences among the states.

What do you think of this plan?

Uhh correct me if I am wrong, but this just doesn't seem like something that is very likely.

First of all Canada is part of the Comon Wealth of the UK... technically they still are tied to Great Brittan (I think thats right anyway, if our neighbors to the north would care to enlighten us).

Secondly I don't recall hearing Canada or Mexico wanting to be lumped in with the US. If they did I'm quite certain that they would have made their desires known.

I really do not see a large enough benifit to any of the countries. I personally think its a poor idea.

Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

As a Canadian, I have absolutely no desire to merge with the US. And I am sure most Americans feel the same about us.

Canadians and Americans have rather different views on some rather important issues. Health Care, taxes, gun control, military, even religion... yikes... The United Church mixing with the bible belt... scary...

It would be cool, but I doubt that Canada would be agreeable. Still, their proximity to the U.S. does bring them some benefits...

Please give us a break. 56 million of us did NOT vote for George Bush.

I agree with the subject line, adding Canada and Mexico to the U.S would destroy it, or accellerate what is already happening.

The United States is not so United at this point in time. Makes you kinda look back to the last time we were this divided...

Of course, opposing ideas and open debate is a good thing. I'm just amazed at the number of people who want socialism over freedom.

Never said you did, but left wing Americans = right wing Canadians :D

Socialism instead of freedom? Nope, don't buy it. From where I stand... well sit... We are pretty socialist, and more free.

Canada's programs sound like they are run a bit more efficiently :D

It'll never happen.
True, because I'm sure they'll be branded as harboring terrorists soon, just so we have an excuse to invade both, annexing them to the US. Perhaps we'll roll out the 'WMD' line again. Hmmmmm... Then we'll totally control North America... Which due to the proximity of asia to the NW tip of the New American Empire, will cause us to invade there too, since we already have a foothold in the middle east....

Then again, paranoid babble can sometimes be amusing reading. ;)

I was at the pariamentary debate in Ottawa. Sat five rows behind Trudeau. It was the first tine in Canadian history every member of parliament spoke in english.

Could we, Michigan, A True Hockey and Beer state, join the United Canadian American States, and leave a few of those who do not have snow and ice and Hockey. ;)

You may have been witnessing the development of the 1982 Constitution Act .

From this page:

On this day in 1982, Queen Elizabeth II 1926- signed the Royal Proclamation of Canada's Constitution in a ceremony on Parliament Hill; brings into force the Constitution Act, 1982, effective April 18; ends British authority in Canada, replaces BNA Act; incorporates Charter of Rights and Freedoms; Canada remains a constitutional monarchy and member of the Commonwealth.
So, the definitive answer is that Canada is a member of the Commonwealth.

Apparently, there are two classes of Commonwealth membership: Being in the Commonwealth of Nations, and being a Commonwealth Realm.

According to the CIA World Factbook entry for Canada:
http://www.odci.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/ca.html

chief of state: Queen ELIZABETH II (since 6 February 1952), represented by Governor General Adrienne CLARKSON (since 7 October 1999)
This is current as of 14 July 2005, it claims.

Only if you can recite by memory the Molson "I am Canadian" ad. :D

I could be like our pledge of allegiance (sp?) ;)
