How does one practice concentration. Then how does one go from practice to performance? Do you have any techniques or drills you utilize in your school or personal training that you would be willing to share? Concentration is first of seven tenants of my study ,yet it seems to me, this principle has had the least amount of discussion in my school.

Concentration means you are paying attention to detail. :)

Concentration is the ability to give your attention or thought to a single object or a single activity. It is also the act of doing the aforementioned and is a large amount of something in one place or in a particular amount of time.
So to practice get to a quiet place and give your complete attention to something. A book, or a single thought / idea for a set time. Or, maybe in doing a particular movement paying attention to the details of the movement.

With concentration being the first of the tenants of your study but least discussed you may want to concentrate study time on concentration study.

Also speaking from personal experience, some have more than others. I am of the latter so turning my environment into a singular focus helps. This with training and practice of course.

I don't want to be picky but it's tenets not tenants unless you have people living in your head.

I suggest you concentrate on it. :)

Sorry, getting confused again. You are talking TSD here right, and not personal concentration. If so forget my post, misread.

I'm not sure what sort of concentration Runs with Fire means either. I assumed like you it was personal concentration because I don't really know any other type unless it's concentrated fruit squash! (squash is the drink you dilute with water in case non Brits don't call it that thus making my joke pointless)

Have you asked your teacher? He may want you to spend some time on it yourself first, but I can't imagine he would leave you adrift on something as important as a tenet of you art.

That said, does he give any explanation of it in writing or verbally in class? Does he really mean meditation? Are you to concentrate on something large or small? Is he talking about a technique or some part of a kata? Perhaps your surroundings while you react to an attack?

Do ask and let us know what he says.

Concentration means forget everything but one.
The key is being receptive. And a relaxed mind and body (but not empty) can increase your receptiveness.
And a relaxed state can be trained through breathing training.
Don't know if this is what you mean...

Ha ha ha, good one. It is of course talked about by instructors and students. It is digressed a bit in our student handbook. I simply wanted to discuss it. I am a person who ,though most wouldn't believe it, enjoy deep thought ;especially on abstract principles.
