The Politico recently spoke with Bob about the campaign and the difficulties that come with running as a third party candidate:

While the Wall Street rescue legislation has allowed Barr to distinguish his campaign on a matter of great pertinence, it has also consolidated the public’s focus on the two main candidates. And as a general matter, Boaz notes, “when there is a crisis, people say government ought to do something. That would hurt his attempt to be making the libertarian or free-market argument.”

Libertarian Party Chairman Bill Redpath says the bailout is “a double-edged sword” for Barr, but that “it’s probably helping more than hurting.”

Barr confesses that he was as caught off-guard as “the average citizen” by the meltdown on Wall Street. He acknowledges that there is “some degree of regulation that is necessary in our society,” and he is pushing for investigations of fraud that may have led to the financial problems.

The disillusionment over the bailout package could bring some additional free-enterprise conservatives to Barr’s side. That number may increase if Barack Obama maintains a significant lead in pre-election polls, freeing some voters to make a philosophical point come Nov. 4.

Barr intends to spend the next several weeks campaigning in the states he feels strongest in: Virginia, Ohio, Colorado, New Hampshire, Florida, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Georgia.
[...]
“The message is resonating with people,” he said recently. This past week, his campaign took several shots across the bow at McCain, saying that the Arizona senator was “guaranteed to lose,” and that these final weeks of the campaign amounted to a “farewell tour.”

Yesterday he issued a release entitled “Barr predicts McCain will lose Georgia,” in which he cracked that “Sen. Obama will not so much win Georgia, as Sen. McCain will lose the state.”

“Who knows,” says Boaz, “If Obama’s lead is at 10 points, maybe in the end a million people will say, ‘I am fed up with the Republican candidate and will vote for the Libertarian.’”

Bob did predict that McCain would lose Georgia yesterday because McCain has never connected with the fiscal conservatives in the Peach State due to his support of big government policies, like cap-and-trade, voting against tax cuts and McCain-Feingold.

We’ve got 10 days until election day. Now is the time to start canvassing or promoting the campaign in another way.

Whatever happens between now and November 4th, we’d like to thank you for your support these past few months.
