Yeah, it is an tradition, also in some french families that I know here in the states as well, ... provided it's with the right wine... (all due respect to your family's tradition of course)... many of the euros that drink at the dinner table the wine has alcohol of course but it's not strong enough to get even buzzing on one glass... drink a LOT of it yeah of course.
Kids drinking wine that's hasn't been allowed to fully ferment is okay because it's better than the water in places. But eating the food helps negate the effects of the alcohol anyway...
