How much time do you devote to sparring/fighting? Do you feel that its important to do this in your training or is it something that you can do without? If you do spar, do you focus on a particular area?

Adults,
At least 25% of our class time is devoted to free fighting.
Teens,
Same as the adults.
Children,
Approx. 15 - 20% of their class time is devoted to free fighting.

Once every few weeks we will work stand up to ground. The rest of the time we will cover the various individual areas of our type of free fighting,
*Stand up impacting,
*Stand up throws,
*Stand up and ground jujitsu,
*Ground suppressions,

I believe that this is a good way to balance out the training for our type of free fighting.

About a 25% of our time is spent sparring, the focus is mostly on stand up, with takedowns and very basic groundwork added later. I don't think you can substitute it for any other aspect of training. At no other point in the standard kenpo training do you deal with the same assumptions, SD techs generally assume untrained attacks with low resistance, sparring is against a trained resisting opponent.

I use sparring to practice my offensive technique entry lines and my ability to read and execute the entry lines of the self-defense techs. I really try not to spar like a kickboxer, I should be doing kenpo.

We spar only once a month, though I think we should do so more often. I don't think it can be replaced with anything, I also believe its vitally important to studying. I see most of my improvement through sparring, as far as reflexes and technique selection.

Hello, Just my two cents here?

If one wants to box...one needs to get into the ring alot..besides the basic out of the ring.

To swim...one needs to get into water and swim...alot to get better.

A board diver..can do imagine dives...they get better by actual doing the dives..

So how important sparring should be? ...alot...because we are training to fight...not dance.

To learn fighting? ....one must do actual fighting....is there an easier way?

Yet? Most schools the percentage is small amount of sparring.

This is one reason I really like Judo....you actual do the throws..NO forms..actual contact and landing...the real thing!

Theory is: To learn to fight? ....one must actual get into fights (safety and in a control eniviroment.) Skills will be needed to develop outside of the ring first....

You can teach a person how to fish? ....when they actual do it? ...it is always different from class...?

Aloha ( fishing is a passion here....catching from shoreline..Uluas', 76lbs is my biggest so far..)

we have a sparring class every week, but during regular class my instructor may devote the entire night to sparring.

most of the time we work drills and focus on certain aspects of sparring. Whether it be hands, feet, combinations, blocking etc. Sometimes though it is just sparring, we pair up go at it for 5 minutes or so then switch partners. These are some of my favorite times, because I get use the drills weve worked and new material Ive gotten.

I think sparring is important. It has actually helped me to defend myself. For example when i was a white and yellow belt, it was block then look for an opening. Now as a blue belt Ive gotten good at striking off the block. This practice proved itself useful at the bars one night.
