When I use the horizontal ridgehand in sparring, I am on the same stance as the opponent, and use a figure 8 movement to parry a lead punch and come over the arm , 45 degrees downwards towards the throat. (So actually thinking about it it isn't a horiaontal ridgehand it is a diagonal one... oh well + sign x sign and all that...)
