This is some insane stuff. I am glad I have CCH in my state. I would hate to have to use it, but in a case like that, I am afraid I would feel the need to defend myself to the fullest of my ability.

He probably could have, but didn't. Remember that scene in Fight Club where they were given the assignment to pick a fight with a random person? Most people don't want to fight. He was stuck in the mindset of appealing to them rationally ("I didn't do anything to you").

That they moved in a pack like jackals suggests to me that there's more to their actions than meets the eye. If not an initiation, then something else. If they ever catch any of the brats it would be interesting to see what comes out of the investigation. They probably won't though.
