In our Laissai Fairee Free Enterprise Markets, local 'Check Cashing' stores are a viable business model. For only a 3% commission, you can convert checks to cash at your local corner store. Imagine that ... you're poor, your old, your disabled ... and as an extra benefit, you get to pay for the same **** the more well off get for free. Man, who wouldn't want to be poor in America today?

Why, the noive of these businesses. Imagine: charging for your services! How rude!

The "more well off" don't get these services for free. Free check cashing is an incentive that banks use to get people to give them their money. So they can use it - it doesn't just sit in an Unca Scrooge-like money bin. It's payment for service rendered.

On topic, I tend to think that this would cause less disenfranchisement rather than more. We've heard the stories about people being turned away at the polls because of mistaken identity - same name as convicted felons, or whatever. This could help to more easily differentiate between them.

If the banks operated branches in the poorer neighborhoods, your argument might be better understood. But, as the banks do not have branches in the poorer parts of town, and the poor people don't have cars to get to the bank branches, the usury fees charged by check cashing companies do all of society a disservice. The same argument can be seen in food stuffs. Grocery stores seldom operate facilities in poor parts of town. The convienence stores that do operate in poor communities often don't have healthy or fresh food. And for what they do have, they charge a premium.

But, hey, my wife and I are in the top quintile ... why should we care?

And recall, the voting problems in Ohio and Florida during the last two election cycles were not caused at the local community level. They were caused by state wide programs, administered by the Secretaries of State, in each case; Purging of voter rolls and inadequately distributing electronic voting machines.

American elections are operated at the community level. If there are complaints about dead people voting, those can be addressed at your town hall. Don't be afraid to volunteer.

Complaints of the dead voting was brought up. There was court case, nothing was done. We went from a paper ballot to electronic. Maryland is a Democrat majority state. The dead vote democratic 9 out of ten times here in Maryland

Regardless of how the state politics break down. The election rolls are a local matter. Controlled in your town. It has nothing to do with State anything. Walk on down to your town hall ... join the committee. Clean up the registration rolls of all the dead people. It probably won't cost you a thing, except time.

And Republicans tend to vote in all the districts in which they own property ... so they get a vote in Maryland, and a vote in Florida.
