What do you think about this article and the idea of perception and marketing?

In the article it talks about how Chrysler and GM are making improvements in the area of V8's which is not really seen as fuel efficeint, but when half your fleet are SUV's and Trucks that have a V8, then why not improve where the largest volume would be. By implementing in the largest volume area you get a cheaper price per unit and also in the end save more fuel and have better emissions that effect the ecology less.
So, is it really important to have fuel efficient 4 cylinder's even if no one really buys them and steps up to the V6 in the same class. I mean it is there for those who do go for it, but does it really make the world better? (* Leading question I know but everyone play nice please. *)
