A massive manhunt was under way in this community near the Jersey shore for the killer of Patrolman Christopher Matlosz, who had just transferred from the night shift a week ago and was engaged to be married next year.
His fiancee rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead less than an hour after the shooting.
http://www.cnn.com/2011/CRIME/01/15/new.jersey.cop.killed/index.html?hpt=Sbin(CNN) -- A New Jersey police officer was killed in what a prosecutor called a close-range, "execution-style" shooting.
The incident occurred Friday afternoon in the New Jersey township of Lakewood. The police officer stopped a pedestrian and was having a conversation with the pedestrian right before the shooting occurred, said Marlene Lynch Ford, the Ocean County prosecutor.
"The individual stepped back suddenly, pulled out a handgun and shot the officer three times," Ford said. "The officer's weapon was still in his holster. That is how quickly it happened."

It was a low-key give-and-take, question-and-answer exchange Friday afternoon, not hostile or confrontational.
That changed in an instant, when the pedestrian pulled a handgun out from his baggy clothing, stepped back and fired three shots into the officer, who never had a chance.
