I don’t know if anyone else here likes vinyl, but record store day is a pretty fun event in my family. Bringing it up because this year, Johnny Marr, Look Out Live! LP is available. That’s definitely on my list this year.

Vinyl sounds really good, but so does lossless digital music. But there are a couple of things about vinyl I really like. The artist gets paid, particularly if you purchase from the artist directly or through something like Bandcamp. So purchasing the vinyl supports the artist, not apple or Spotify execs.

Second is that there’s something about listening to an entire album, in order, without skipping songs. Vinyl encourages that and it definitely changes the way you appreciate the music.

Edit to add that I also like owning physical media and vinyl is just cool.

My friend went to school and then Wythenshawe College (Manchester, my home town) with Johnny Marr. He said he was always trendy and bohemian in his fashion sense; velvet jackets, cravats etc and he was the ‘cock of the school’ meaning the toughest and best fighter- you didn’t mess with him. BUT he always used his fighting skills to stick up for the underdogs in schools; the bespectacled, fat nerds, the socially awkward and the brown-skinned kids. What a guy!

When I turned 21, my dad gifted me an Ibanez JEM7V-WH. It’s a 2006 Japanese-made version from Team J. Craft, built at the FujiGen factory. Mine has the rosewood fretboard, and newer models are replaced with ebony due to CITES regulations. It also has the Edge Pro tremolo, only used between 2003 and 2010.

It's been discontinued sadly but I'm happy to own the best version of the JEM ever produced. If only I could play half as good as Vai.

It’s a great guitar, but I dislike scratch plates (even transparent ones) so I never bought one. Instead I bought something as close as possible.

Somewhere, I have a photo of me playing Steve Vai ‘s EVO…the ‘Answers’ lick!
