Mastery of a bad weapon vs untrained or basic training using far superior weapons

The advantage of various weapons is of course, situational. Using a sword to deal with a spear user is an exercise in getting shanked unless you're super good. It's much like unarmed vs. knife... not impossible, but not easy.

More importantly, the OP obviously needs to expand his repertoire of tabletop rpgs! Runequest accounts for range, as does C&S, Riddle of Steel (written by a well-known and highly skilled HEMA fighter) and a host of others. If you don't want a new system, just house rule it.
