Martialtalk Meetup

Just so you know this is about where I am in relation to the rest of Australia.

But we are also on the great barrier reef. So it is a worthwhile visit.

And to put that in to perspective my blue dot is 93 miles from Mackay.

Personally, I've always wanted to travel to australia. And I know @drop bear and @_Simon_ are over there, though I don't know how close y'all are. That said, it'd be my vacation for the year, and an expensive one, so idk how practical that is for everyone else here. Personally I've got no vacation plans set for this year, so if the recommendation is Australia, the UK, New england or seattle, I can probably use any of those as an excuse for my vacation.

Could be fun as a fellow Aussie.

Was Dr Yang around there in those days?

I’m not sure. I think he might have visited there. The place was hopping at times, a lot of big mucky mucks coming in. I loved the place. The only reason I left was moving back here.
The commute would have been a bee-ach.

If he was he was probably teaching at, i think, MIT, not martial arts, whatever his degree is in. Not sure YMAA existed at that time. His first book was published in 1981. I bought it and read it, and i didn’t realize he was in Boston, and i only lived 30 minutes away
I believe he has a doctorate in mechanical engineering. I believe he began teaching martial arts full time circa 1978. I could be slightly off on either of those. I will ask him tomorrow.

Apparently my Wing Chun Shigong knew of him in Boston. He was also a teacher at a college, not sure which one. And he was teaching Wing Chun in Boston as well

Boston U if I am correct. Wing Chun? White Crane? He teaches the latter not the former.
Sorry, i was not clear. I know what Dr Yang teaches, and i know he does not teach Wing Chun.

My shigong (Ling Shigong) was also a professor in Boston, at MIT, and he taught Wing Chun in Boston. I do not believe they knew each other, but Ling Shigong was aware of Dr Yang in Boston. My wing chun sifu and I were actually talking about it in November.

Now to the OP, to get back on track, sorry about the derailment

I would like to go to a meet up, but it would depend on location. Also Mrs Xue has planned a trip to Japan and Hong Kong this summer. So, unless it is driving distance for me, it is unlikely i will be able to go.

Besides, I’m old, arthritic, beat up and broken, and i don’t even gave all my OEM parts…so i would be limited

You would survive the Meet Up lol. We didn't kill each other during at the last one.

Oh got it. I misunderstood you.

You don't understand..... a man's got to know his limitations....... and at a martial arts meet up....I would tend to forget those.... and these days, I tend to hurt myself..... more like.."Sure, what the heck, I'll give it a try" followed by "ow....where's my cane" :D
