However will you survive??
I know, right?
It's been really mild so far. But we all know what is coming...

Had a great week this week. My son asked to come to BJJ with me hes a pretty good High School wrestler (6th in the state at his weight and only wrestled for 2 years so far.) so he did really well holding his own against some of the adults in the class. It was a proud dad moment watching him roll with others in the class.
Then a bunch of guys from class met to play some football yesterday and took my son with me to play. Learned 2 things #1 Im too damn old to be playing tackle ball with a bunch of 20 somethings I feel like I was run over by a bus today. #2 see #1 lol ouch.
Had a great time with my son hes 15 and I know my days of hanging out with him are coming to a close in the next few years so Im trying to cherish them now.

Another Corona Virus Variant..... there will be more....just like the Flu
Yes sir.
My wife and I both took sick Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Got tested ($150 each) and were both positive. We have no idea where we were exposed. In that regard I feel it is exactly like the Flu. Have felt crappy with Flu-like symptoms but overall, not too bad considering the stories I have read.
And just like the Flu, we (humans) are smart enough to give it a name but powerless to do anything to cure it. And little to prevent it IMHO. Mother nature and her gift of herd immunity is about the best we have right now.

What I'm reading from immunologists at this point is that we are unlikely to actually reach herd immunity, because variants are too common. This will probably be an annual immunization for the foreseeable future.

You know Texas :). We have not found it to be pleasant here. Three years and we're contemplating a change.
Still have a lot of extended family in Texas, but most of my family has left. People who have lived there tend to have definite opinions one way or the other.

Had everyone gotten vaccinated early, we might have reached herd immunity before new strains emerged. But that ship has sailed, for sure. it’s so frustrating.

Add the unwillingness to practice minimal mitigating measures.
We are doomed.
I want to move to Oz...

True, though that would have had to include all the countries that are struggling to get vaccine rolled out. I'm not sure it was logistically possible to do that. I'm wondering what hindsight lessons we'll gain from this. Should we have gone for partial vaccination of more people? Will one vaccine or another prove more resistant to these more divergent variants?

The distasteful part of herd immunity is the very large survival of the fittest factor. Someone was talking about Calculus earlier. Mother Nature is the best mathematician ever. Humans just run around trying to figure out what the variables are.
Claiming masks sooner and “playing by the rules” or such would have fixed all this is a foolish bandaid claim. And pretty naive.
Nature will run its course and as creatures of the planet we are along for the ride.
Frankly, I am not certain knowing there is another strain coming down the pipe matters. Especially given the fear mongering already going on right now. Add finger pointing like Fauci was doing on MTP this morning and it is no wonder.
I hope I am wrong but until someone starts talking about a cure it looks like nothing will change in the short term.

I have to go feed cattle.

I think we are looking at this through two different lenses.
To me it is all the same thing (Covid-19). You see each variant an a separate entity.
I am not nearly smart enough about things like viruses to be that objective.

Reducing infections by things like masks and partial isolation invariably reduces copy errors, which are what lead to variants. Or, more accurately, more infections (and higher viral loads, so more viruses total) provide more opportunities for meaninful variations to occur. So measures with a proven record for reducing those help reduce variations over time.
