Lunge punches!!

So what is everyone feelings of lunge punches? Originally when I was taught them our instructors kind of blew it off as mainly a tournament type punch not really that effective on the street. Now what do you think about it?
Frankly being a tall guy with a long reach to begin with I love them. Not to mention whenever I've sparred non-kenpo guys and even some kenpo guys typically after the strike and when I bring my body forward and slam into them I usually knock them off their feet or at minimum off thier balance. I think that I'd honestly use it in the street to cover the distance and get in close and personal to wreck some face.
