Using the ranking system and appropriate titles has worked well for us. Like many systems, it can work wonderfully when implemented appropriately or can cause grief when misused or abused.
I also agree about being careful about casting judgement on those one isn't qualified to judge! At my earlier stages in training i made this mistake at times until one day i realized my instructor saw the big picture more clearly than myself and was more qualified to make ranking judgements than i was for those that out ranked me.
It took a great weight off of my shoulders to stop worrying about others and to just focus on improving myself and those that i am qualified to promote.
There will always be someone to abuse a system just as there will always be those that are jealous of the achievements of others.
I think one's best focus is to always be positive contributors and keep forging ahead and not worry about the critics!
