I met the scariest contial artist today.

I only tuned in to find out what "contial" was. I feel disappointed now to have invested 38 seconds reading.. Oh well.. back to Facebook to unfriend some miscreants.

But you never friended me in the first place. :( ;)

martial artist
con artist
martial con artist.
contial artist

Personal it would have made more sense to me with

Martial Artist and Con Artist generating Martial Conartist

Or for the minimalists the Martial Cartist but that could get people confused about people fighting with carts. :(

With so many polysyllabic words not used already (* excpet for a few shown in this thread ;) *) I never understood why we had to create new ones.

Oh I understand when we develop new technologies suchs a telecommunications and all the new words there as well as in the computer fields, but ...

Oh the heck with it...just call him Bruce... it cuts down on the confusion :D

oooooooooh
Immanuel Kant was a real pissant
Who was very rarely stable,
Heidegger, Heidegger was a boozy begger
Who could think you under the table,
David Hume could out-consume,
Wilhelm Freidrich Hegel.
And Wittgenstein was a beery swine
Who was just as schloshed as Schlegel.
There's nothing Nietzche couldn't teach ya
'Bout the raising of the wrist.
Socrates himself was permanently pissed.
John Stuart Mill, of his own free will
On half a pint of shandy was particularly ill.
Plato, they say could stick it away,
Half a crate of whiskey everyday.
Aristotle, Aristotle was a bugger for the bottle,
Hobbes was fond of his dram,
And Rene Descartes was a drunken fart
"I drink, therefore I am."
Yes, Socrates himself is particularly missed,
A lovely little thinker but a bugger when he's pissed.

Well if they get offended at being asked what a word they made up means.... it would not have ended well no matter how it went.

You shoud have seen my first post before I edited it... it was much less kind and much more along the lines of a good xue rant

Strangely enough, I got it. I thought the title was a typo and I read the OP to see if it was. After reading the post I understood he was doing a little play on words. I also thought it was a funny story.

Textbook example of how to run a newbie MT'er out of town.

You may have a point.

But there is nothing wrong with someone using their vocabulary and also making a play at it, when the original poster did the same.

If I am in the wrong, then by that logic so would the original poster.

I agree with Xue, that those that asked up front and got rude responses showed the original poster was trying to get something over on the crowd similar to a troll or trollish behaviour.

The usual response for such behaviour is make a funny and point and laugh the internet is one of the last places in the Modern Culture where one can get direct social feedback on what is acceptable and not.

But the original poster in my opinion did not cross a line to deserve being banned, but I seriously thought about negative rep and a signed message. I choose not to force the original poster to fight his way out of the negative rep and what others would think of someone marked red, but hoped that the original poster might learn from the situation.

Good for you because you got it. I did not and everyone else did not get it either who posted. They were asking for clarification and then commenting on their confusion as well.

But for the original poster to get upset and tell people it was their fault for asking and not understanding his made up word.

To me that was wrong and deserved the comments and questions that followed.

Hello,

Not fair... "Miscreants" is a real word.
Boy, did this whole thread get "derailed"...

Thanks,
Milt G.

Hey, I have no cock in this fight. I really don't care if you label him a troll and ban him, don't care. I just thought he was sharing a funny story and everyone seems to be getting hung up on his play with words. He's new here and maybe should be given the benefit of the doubt. But then again, maybe I'm wrong, I'll re-read the thread.

A Plan for the Improvement of English Spelling
by Mark Twain
For example, in Year 1 that useless letter "c" would be dropped to be replased either by "k" or "s", and likewise "x" would no longer be part of the alphabet. The only kase in which "c" would be retained would be the "ch" formation, which will be dealt with later. Year 2 might reform "w" spelling, so that "which" and "one" would take the same konsonant, wile Year 3 might well abolish "y" replasing it with "i" and Iear 4 might fiks the "g/j" anomali wonse and for all. Jenerally, then, the improvement would kontinue iear bai iear with Iear 5 doing awai with useless double konsonants, and Iears 6-12 or so modifaiing vowlz and the rimeining voist and unvoist konsonants. Bai Iear 15 or sou, it wud fainali bi posibl tu meik ius ov thi ridandant letez "c", "y" and "x" -- bai now jast a memori in the maindz ov ould doderez -- tu riplais "ch", "sh", and "th" rispektivli. Fainali, xen, aafte sam 20 iers ov orxogrefkl riform, wi wud hev a lojikl, kohirnt speling in ius xrewawt xe Ingliy-spiking werld.

PRICELESS!

Woah, big misunderstanding there. I never became upset that misunderstandings arose, nor do I find it intolerable or a burden to elaborate on anything if it needs to be clarified. I think things are starting to become far too misunderstood. I also never blamed anyone. Please take the time to re-read my comments. If you still feel like giving me negative rep, please do so. Thank you for understanding.

Edit: I would also like to mention that I find the comments about the made up word to be satirical, whether or not that is their intention. Please do not mis-understand. They are not in any way annoying, or angering me. Thanks for understanding.

I have several names, mainly because I sweat so much during training.

SpongeBob, Wet Mop, Mop Boy, Slippery Sign, Puddle.

But Bruce is fine. xP

Can I show my respect for you by plurifying (hah!) the word and calling you "Puddles"?

It might have helped had the word "con" or "con artist" appeared somewhere in the original post... And I checked; it's not there. As I noted, new coined words need context to be intelligible. Otherwise, they're conglomerations of letters/sounds.

Welcome to MT Galens. I like your story. (And for the record, I have no problem with made-up words. But I'd rather stay on the topic of your story. :mst: )

I think every MA community has characters like that. It's human nature, just like every church congregation has a few holier-than-thous. I'm curious as to why you invited him to your class though? He sounds like a poster boy of who not to teach. Of course, I'm no instructor myself so I could be wrong on that. Glad you got rescued in any case.

I find myself often having to explain to non english speakers what martial arts even means...

sorry, but somehow, my mind is not willing to accept the word contial artist. I find it is somewhat misleading. I mean, mixing words up to that degree. Why not say a martial con artist or martial arts con. In some cases i could accept such mixing especially in context or amongst a certain group or society...i'm surprised such a word as contial even exists at all-i agree an explaination would have been helpful and made the post more enjoyable.

What makes them contial rather than just normal martial?? Is there some background story to this term?

Whatever the case, i believe it is good to be open, willing to learn and experience- the truth usually has a habbit of forcing its way out anyway. That is if dealing with 'contial' artists.
However, still not sure what exactly falls under the term contial artist, but i would imagine that one would need to expose their gameplan. Because knowing cons, everything is there for a reason, little can be trusted and there is some kind of underlying goal or target that is to be achieved by deception rather than upfront outmanouvering on equal terms.
