Hugo Chavez and anti-aircraft missles

This...is dumb.

"Among the two most alarming revelations is the already completed sale and delivery, to Venezuela by Russia, of nearly 2,000 advanced, shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles capable of hitting aircraft as high as 19,000 feet.....He has also purchased an enormous number of Russian assault rifles — the real thing, fully automatic military rifles, not the non-existent “assault weapons” of gun control imaginations and press releases — and related weapons and ammunition....With these weapons, Chavez can dominate the region."

This is absurd. 2000 shoulder mounted AA missiles and a load of AK-47 knockoffs won't allow Chavez to dominate anything. Every army in the world has similar weapons. Even the child militia soldiers in African civil wars carry these "scary" weapons. Is anyone even trying to think critically?

Guess what? CHAVEZ HAS TANKS!!! OH GOD NO RUN FOR IT!!!!!!!

The author claims that we should also destroy all anti-air defenses in Venzuela, including these shoulder mounted weapons. How in the blue **** does he think we can do that without an invasion...

Oh.

One of the big concerns in the article is terrorists using shoulder based missles against American aircraft. The fact that Iran is sending them to Venezuela, and that our border is almost non-existent is a real threat. If Iran arms Venezuela with nuclear warheads, in the future, he is a real threat. All this While obama plays buddy buddy with Chavez and ignores Iran.

Do you remember that we ourselves equipped the mujahadeen with these very weapons in their fight against the Soviets? It's a little late to start worrying now.

Is there any evidence that Chavez is interested in supplying Islamic terrorists with his shiny new toys? Has it ever happened before? What would he have to gain considering what would happen when the weapons were traced back to him? If he wanted to do so, why hasn't he already supplied them with weapons from his national army? You DO remember that Venezuela is a good sized nation state with its own army and weapon systems, right?

Think already.

It is his ties, ever deepening to radical islamic Iran, that is the problem. Giving missles to knock out Soviet helicopters during the soviet invasion of Afghanistan is different than radical islamic terrorists using them against American civillian aircraft. Also, Chavez, according to the article is in tight with drug cartels. These cartels are a real problem to our southern border and letting Chavez think he is untouchable is not a good way to stopping this problem. I don't think Chavez would have a problem with terrorists taking down an American plane and trashing our economy again. Even if it was discovered that Iranian backed terrorists passed through venezuela to get into the U.S., a nasty letter from Obama would hardly be a deterrent. I suggest you watch what happened to Hanz Blicks when he confronted Kim Jung il in that wonderful film "Team America."

The point is that the missles were already in the hands of radical Islamists, so no it isn't different at all.

How does stopping arms deals with Venezuela stop the drug cartels?

Fantasies. When you're ready to join the real world, let us know. Until then, stop trying to pass off movie scenes as some sort of argument.

Yes, you are right. I was wrong. A left wing wack job like chavez in league with radical islamic terrorist backing countries, ex-kgb thug Putin, drug cartels and any other evil monster in the world really doesn't pose a problem for the short or long term security of the United States. Your wisdom is awe inspiring and humbles me. I will now go back to picking daisies and watching Oprah.

Iran is sending American aircraft to Venezuela?
America doesn't have a border with Venezuela does it so it can't be nearly non existant.

Probably better to be friends with people with nuclear weapons than enemies.

It is even better to not let left wing nuts get nuclear weapons. You know, everyone says, "If only they had stopped hitler when he invaded Austria." Well, if only they had stopped chavez when he was just getting missles from Iran.

Hmm, several quick thoughts:

The US/CIA trained the Mujahedin in Afganistan, the same people they are fighting now - ouch, right.

There was a little thing called 'The Iran-Contra affair' Talking about supporting the enemy, and no, no heads rolled. Everybody conviniently contracted amnesia...

Chavez is who he is. I think he is the elected representative of his people, even though he seems to turn on them at this time. It's a sovereign country, they are, surprise surprise, allowed to have their own army.
And no, Venezuela is a long way away from the southern border of the US....

"History teaches that war begins when governments believe the price of aggression is cheap."
--Ronald Reagan.

I have bad news for you Bill, it woould be easier for terrorists to buy AA missiles inside the US than to try to smuggle them from Venezuela.
