Ruphine Powell's family needs help, his friend Darrell Jordan said. Powell, 52, (pictured left) was slain last week in the Mercy Drive area. Friends and family don't have many details about the attack, but Jordan said Powell was visiting a friend in the area when he got into a dispute. He tried to avoid fighting, but was shot.

Powell was supporting his daughter and two grandchildren, who had just moved to the area from up north, Jordan said.

Powell was a martial artist, and his school is trying to raise money to make funeral arrangements, but it's hard to raise much in this economic climate, Jordan said. it's not even clear they'll have enough money to get Powell's daughter to the funeral, which will take place in the greater New York area.
