I've been looking for quality foot gear for sparring for a long time. I hate the vinyl foot pads because they shift all over and they tend to cut agility by making it harder to balance. What kind of foot gear would you recommend? I'm thinking about trying some kind of shoe, if such a product exists...

Any recommendations?

BTW - I went sans foot gear when sparring for a long time, but I keep breaking toes. Stuff happens I guess...

I would recommend Century's C-Gear or their Powerline gear. They have a 1/2 leather sole across the ball of the foot, but otherwise are a little more like shoes than the more open bottomed foam dipped gear. Just a thought.

I've got both instep pads and sparring boots. The thing with the boots is that after a short time your feet start to really sweat in them and it takes a little time to get used to them. I like the instep pads because if you get a smaller size they really don't move and you can always use tape. I know some people cut off the straps and just tape them to their foot.

Weird, I never thought about that. I suppose I could just tape the ones I have until I get some better ones...

Ringstar now makes a shoe that is allowed in tournaments for fighting and forms. It is padded on the top. The shoe is excellent, good grip, comfortable, padded well. Only problem is it is wearing on the toe a bit if you tend to blitz at all and drag your toe a little. Otherwise, they are great.

That sounds great! Do you have a link?

OK, I used some google-fu and found them myself. Has anyone ever tried these? How do they work? Any reports?

Hey, sorry I took so long to get back. The ringstars are great. Wear them with light socks. They are allowed in tournament sparring. Nice thing is, no dirty feet coming at you. Actually know of someone who was scratched on the leg by a nail of an opponent and it became infected - now on antibiotics. Like the covered foot!
